#WIPSnips 9.19 - "tube"

Don't have that, so we're going with "tunnel." IDK, might change it to "tube."

...any way, a magics lesson.

My boots crunched on the charcoal as I walked around the altar bowl, fighting that magic pulse, until I had one foot on either side of the Rift, facing that chaotic edge. Black lightning leapt from the band of magic, crackling around me as I lifted my sword.
Without knowing them, I heard alien syllables in my throat as I lifted my sword and pushed it, edge to edge, into the band of black flames. Reality screamed in protest as holy steel met demonic magic. Rays of blazing multicolored light streamed from the point of contact, but I bore down, still rhythmically chanting, breath tearing at my throat, boots scraping on gritty charcoal.
Dreamily, as blinding and deafening magic streamed around me, I heard a familiar voice. “See this grommet on your vest here? A Rift is like that, a ring in two pieces that makes a very thin tunnel. All you have to do is get in between the two halves. A little pressure, a little twist, and pop!”
I could almost see familiar lips in the round O of the word when the Rift did exactly that: collapsed with a sudden deafening concussion. That cut the last tether to my body and I watched from a distance as a mote of darkness sent me sailing backward out of the bowl before winking out of existence. There was a jolt as I hit something, and then darkness.

#WIPSnips 9.10 "teeth"

...in which our hero has been zapped by some kind of magic and can't move.

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #weirdwestern #mmhorror

Electricity fizzled within me, sharp and prickly, as I strained to move. Whatever spell they’d thrown held fast. Boots thumped on the deck behind me, moving towards the companionway, then clattering dully on the ladder.
A jolt of the boat rolled me over, and I saw Corbin fighting with the wheel and a pirate at the same time. Whatever they’d zapped me with only had one shot, apparently, but the apprentice was holding his own. Ducking to avoid a flailing machete, he yanked the wheel, and the boat slewed the other way. I distinctly heard the crossbow skitter away from me on the deck.
Gritting my teeth, I closed my eyes and prayed, “Archangel Sariel, aid me in my hour of need. Unravel these magics. Break these chains.” A surge of power answered me. The fire crackled again within my limbs, hot, hotter, and then shattered in a painful burst. Feeling rushed through me, then weakness. Shuddering, I pushed myself over and struggled to one knee.

#WIPSnips 9.8 "mental"

...in which our hero has some brain zaps and moments of alarm.

A weird, shivery note pinged through my skull, and I didn’t catch much of what he said as he dragged us along the torn-up street in the shadows of decimated homes. “Attack… Flyers and the, uh, devils…” The keen faded out finally, and I heard, “…holed up in the Big House.” He meant the meeting house, a large barn like structure common in these Federation homesteads.
“Who’s in the Big House?” I asked, ducking as another shadow raced, shrieking, across the sky. The boy stared. I snapped my fingers.
“Townsfolk. And me. Like I said, I just happened to be passin’ through when they attacked. Me and some good men got most everybody inside. Then I set off one of those ping crystals that I, uh, got from your stuff.”
“Fuck.” My next mental zing was of alarm. Wasn’t supposed to be seeing any brothers with this cargo, and the kid just called them.

#WIPSnips✨9.7 - "elevator"

Ain't got one of those. "Stairs" will have to do.

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #queerwriters #weirdwestern #mmfantasy

“Go,” I gestured to the angel. “Stairs.”
“As you wish,” he murmured. Somehow he made climbing down a ladder look graceful. I was not nearly as deft as I descended into the cabin, so close and quiet after the chill of night air. A narrow galley stretched most of the port side, just a sad sink and single-burner stove; above, there were mismatched cupboards with railed shelves, crowded with the usual detritus of human habitation. The air carried the mingled scents of river water, old wood, engine oil, damp rope, and coffee.
Jean stared around listlessly at the cramped but practical cabin. Though stooped slightly because of the low ceiling, he was just as beautiful as he had been in the attic. When he looked at me, sapphire eyes were mournful. “You should rest, mon chevalier. Your body needs it.”
“No,” I groaned. “Not yet.” I dragged my eyes away from the holy-flame glitter of his eyes.
