Looking forward to welcoming my tutees for this weekend's 'Lichens for beginners' course at FSC Epping Forest. The classroom is ready, the weather is sunny and warm, and the secret world of #lichens awaits its newest explorers! @fieldstudiesc.bsky.social @britishlichensociety.org.uk #lichenGBI

2/2 The Lichens of Chalk Grassland, Gilbert O.L. The Lichenologist. 1993;25(4):379-414. is the only article to considers chalk pebbles in detail; the main lichens Gilbert identifies are Verrucaria hochstetteri V. muralis, V. murina and V. nigrescens. #lichenGBI This is probably V. muralis

Saw this on Ash yesterday at the Devil's Dyke, West Sussex. I think it is probably Parmotrema perlatum but the stalked soralia with soredia don't look quite right for P. perlatum; they are not at the margins of lobes but within the lobes. Haven't seen anything like this before. Any ideas? #lichenGBI

Relict chalk pits on the South Down's are one of the best places to see chalk lichens. Bagliettoa calciseda. Monstrously difficult to see: immersed white-grey thallus - for goodness sake! Perithecia (fruiting bodies) immersed in pits & look like scraps of soil. Probably under-recorded #LichenGBI
