Look i just found a new crush this #MinCup26 in #Cylindrite

@erikstrub.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 8:36 AM

Come on! No crystal structure, yes,... but would you also kick out icosahedrite? Probably some people will, but I am all for cylindrical of 5-fold symmetries. Vote #cylindrite ! #mincup27

@ougeolsoc.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 5:45 AM

#pyromorphite - dainty green clumps like mineral moss, but the oddness of those "rolled, incommensurate atomic sheets" of #cylindrite is intriguing. Still on #TeamCylindrite in this round of #MinCup26

@bobthebird.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 5:38 AM

Nothing else has crystals like these. A vote for uniqueness. #Cylindrite

@crystallised-cricket.comSep 22, 2026, 3:41 AM

I hope that I'm not the harbinger of doom for #Pyromorphite, but it really does deserve to win today's #MinCup26 round because it does know where it's atoms are at (no crystal structure set for #Cylindrite)

Image representing the crystal structure of pyromorphite - here red spheres represent oxygen atoms, grey spheres/polygons represent lead atoms, purple spheres/polygons represent phosphorus atoms and green spheres represent calcium atoms. The representation is drawn in VESTA from entry #5226 in the American mineralogist database

#MinCup26 I was going to vote for #cylindrite, but then I read about the possible lead remediation properties of #pyromorphite. Go #pyromorphite because lead poisoning freaks me out a bit.

#MinCup26 Round 2 Match 6:
It's a pair of soft, heavy lead minerals as vivid hexagonal phosphate #Pyromorphite is against spiralling rolled sheets of #Cylindrite.

TOXIC TAKIS - VOTE #CYLINDRITE

@ougeolsoc.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 1:01 PM

Love the mica look alike crystals of #pyrrhotite but the sheer strangeness of #cylindrite sheets turning themselves into roll ups is amazing do that's where my bote is going today!

Gotta be #Cylindrite

#MinCup26

@beniandermatt.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 7:37 AM

As someone who doesn't know jack sh*t about minerals, I appreciate #Cylindrite for having a perfectly descriptive name.
A rock that does what it sais on the tin.

@bobthebird.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 6:31 AM

Sometimes during #MinCup I learn about a new mineral, and immediately go "I gotta get me one of those!"
I'm voting #Cylindrite

@corgiseveryhour.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 3:44 AM

Oh yeah, a #metalmatchup with #pyrrhotite v #cylindrite, and my #teampoison position requires me to pick the lead laden #cylindrite.

@fortmaligator.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 2:30 AM

Voting for #cylindrite tonight as it’s sufficiently convinced me of being a (slightly) better match for Valyrian steel in GOT. Unlike Fe-rich #pyrrhotite, it doesn’t rust; but like Valyrian steel, it’s exceptionally rare. Difficult choice, but visually it’s also spot on for the throne.

found a paper describing #cylindrite structure a little bit #MinCup26
www.minsocam.org/ammin/AM77/A...
no diagram tho, showing why sheets curl up into cylinders.

@louisedawe.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 1:06 AM

I'm voting #cylindrite for #MinCup26! As reported by Evain in @actacrystb.iucr.org, levyclaudite-(Sb), a member of the cylindrite-type minerals, is incommensurately modulated and joins sheets with mismatched dimensions, producing its extraordinary curved form! journals.iucr.org/b/issues/200...

@warriorchicken.meSep 12, 2026, 12:57 AM

My vote goes to #Cylindrite over the fascinating but treacherous pyrrhotite

@crystallised-cricket.comSep 12, 2026, 12:48 AM

No contest today in #MinCup26 in my mind - #Cylindrite is one of the minerals that sneaked into definition with no crystal structure defined! So #Pyrrhotite all the way - plus there's there awesome thing that a small nudge in the iron positions is what gives it its magnetic properties.

Image representing the crystal structure of Pyrrhotite, here I've plotted out the monoclinic version. Yellow spheres represent sulfur atoms and brown spheres represent iron atoms. The structure is viewed down its b-axis, and shows off that the atoms are slightly displaced from high-symmetry sites, this makes for a larger repeating unit and ultimately give the material its weakly magnetic properties. The representation is drawn in VESTA from entry #288 in the American mineralogist database.

#MinCup26 Round 1 Match 12
Grey hides complexity for these metal-rich minerals as trickster #Pyrrhotite battles geometrically-unusual #Cylindrite in this monochromatic matchup.
