Do you know about #pyrrhotite?

It's the focus of one the tragic true stories in the new book now available on Amazon.ca : Canadas Other Housing Crisis.

“Nobody knew about this mineral. Nobody knew that there was [a health] issue with it related to ready-mix concrete.”

“This mineral” is #pyrrhotite, and although it isn’t a fun reason to vote for the mineral in this #MinCup26 round, it’s a good one. Read all about it: eos.org/articles/hom...

Excellent #Pyrrhotite crystal from the tungsten mine in the Felbertal, Hohe Tauern, Austria.

Came to read about #pyrrhotite because "bad for concrete" is important for us here in CT (lots of local research).

Voting for #pyrrhotite because black smokers, and because it is found in Martian meteorites and may help us in interpreting the magnetic signatures in the ancient Martian crust.

Love the mica look alike crystals of #pyrrhotite but the sheer strangeness of #cylindrite sheets turning themselves into roll ups is amazing do that's where my bote is going today!

As a paleomagnetic mineral, #Pyrrhotite has my vote. Even if I can’t reliably spell it. Even when it usually shows up as a late diagenetic remagnetization which complicates your interpretations. #MinCup26

Oh yeah, a #metalmatchup with #pyrrhotite v #cylindrite, and my #teampoison position requires me to pick the lead laden #cylindrite.

Voting for #cylindrite tonight as it’s sufficiently convinced me of being a (slightly) better match for Valyrian steel in GOT. Unlike Fe-rich #pyrrhotite, it doesn’t rust; but like Valyrian steel, it’s exceptionally rare. Difficult choice, but visually it’s also spot on for the throne.

No contest today in #MinCup26 in my mind - #Cylindrite is one of the minerals that sneaked into definition with no crystal structure defined! So #Pyrrhotite all the way - plus there's there awesome thing that a small nudge in the iron positions is what gives it its magnetic properties.

Image representing the crystal structure of Pyrrhotite, here I've plotted out the monoclinic version. Yellow spheres represent sulfur atoms and brown spheres represent iron atoms. The structure is viewed down its b-axis, and shows off that the atoms are slightly displaced from high-symmetry sites, this makes for a larger repeating unit and ultimately give the material its weakly magnetic properties. The representation is drawn in VESTA from entry #288 in the American mineralogist database.

#MinCup26 I have collected rock from ~130 locations in NY and MA for a few years now... but I have not found MANY new minerals for me. But #Pyrrhotite is one of them. very exciting cuz... MAGNETIC!
This grew in a mess of quartz in this Stockbridge Marble formation in Berkshire Co. MA.

#MinCup26 Round 1 Match 12
Grey hides complexity for these metal-rich minerals as trickster #Pyrrhotite battles geometrically-unusual #Cylindrite in this monochromatic matchup.
