It was foggy when I got to the refuge, but there was a clear blue sky when I stopped at my favorite spot along the river (Great Meadows NWR, Concord, Mass. - 10/5/26) 🤩💙

The Concord River, which runs along the edge of Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, Massachusetts. The river was lined with tall trees with green and a few red leaves under a bright blue sky. To the left, there was brown mud on the bank sprinkled with fallen brown leaves. The river water was filled with reflections of the blue sky and green trees.

A male (drake) Mallard with an iridescent green head, white neck ring, chestnut-brown chest, light gray patterned flanks and back, black rear end and black tail feathers, and a yellow bill, swimming with a female (hen) Mallard with a mottled brown and tan body with a darker crown, dark stripe through the eye, and an orange bill with dark smudges. The ducks were swimming in brown, rippled water that had flowed over the banks of the nearby river into a wooded area. Seen in December at Great Meadows NWR in Concord, Massachusetts.

A Spotted Sandpiper (without spots on its chest) was in its non-breeding plumage of a grayish-brown back and a plain white breast. This was one of two sandpipers that were standing on a small brown mud flat near the edge of the Concord River. The water was rippling slightly and had reflections of the bird, a brown branch on the left, pink and red flowers near the bottom, and many shades of green foliage and leaves that were along the shoreline. Seen at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, Massachusetts.

A peaceful scene looking across the Concord River from the riverbank. The water was very still and full of reflections of tall brown trees with green leaves, broken brown trees and branches, and green plants on the opposite shore, as well as reflections of the blue sky with puffy white clouds. There was a hawk on top of the brown snag that took off as soon as it saw me and flew into the trees. Oh well. At least I captured the pretty scene! Seen at Great Meadows NWR in Concord, Massachusetts.
