Please remember how they lived, not only how they DIED.

For families affected by substance-related loss, remembering someone's personality, dreams, humor, talents, and love can help keep their full story at the center.

I don't have to grieve like you to have loved deeply.

One person may cry openly while another becomes quiet, stays busy, or needs space. Different reactions don't mean one person loved more than another.

“Maybe healing today looks like saying YES.”

Accepting an invitation, trying something new, or enjoying yourself again doesn't mean you've forgotten anyone. It can simply mean you're making room for life alongside grief.

Please don't only remember me when my grief is new.

Support often decreases with time even though grief may continue. Remembering birthdays, anniversaries, or simply checking in months later can mean a great deal.

To everyone else, it's just a shirt. To me, it's THEM.

There is no universal timeline for sorting belongings after a loss. Some people keep things, donate them, give them to family, or create keepsakes when they feel ready.

Your laughter doesn't mean you've forgotten them.

Laughing after a loss doesn't mean you have stopped grieving or forgotten someone. Moments of happiness can be part of continuing to live while still carrying love and loss.

Did you get out of bed? Eat something? Answer that call? That counts.

Things you once enjoyed may feel less important after a loss. Starting small and allowing yourself time can make returning to everyday life feel more manageable.

Sometimes grief begins BEFORE the date arrives.

Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and other meaningful dates may cause sadness or worry days or weeks beforehand. Sometimes anticipating the day feels just as difficult as the day itself.

Sometimes grieving people don't need advice.

They need company. Grief isn't a problem friends and family need to solve. Sometimes the greatest support is listening without rushing someone to feel better.

Then your phone shows you a memory you weren't prepared to see..

A photo notification, old text, voicemail, or social media memory can bring comfort and sadness at the same time. It's okay to decide when you're ready to revisit them.

You don't have to make a permanent decision during a temporary emotional moment.

When possible, give yourself time before making a major decision during an emotionally overwhelming moment. Pause, rest, pray, and talk with someone you trust.

Some memories have a scent.

Perfume, food, laundry detergent, or even the smell of a familiar place can suddenly remind you of someone you miss.

Why do the smallest decisions feel so BIG when you're grieving?

When your mind is already carrying heavy emotions, even small choices can feel exhausting. Simplifying your day and asking for help can ease some of that pressure.

The funeral ended.

Their grief didn't. Grief doesn't end when calls and condolences slow down. Remembering to check in later can remind someone that they haven't been forgotten.

Today, I'm protecting my peace. A wellness plan doesn't always need more things to do. Sometimes healing means deciding what you can postpone, decline, or stop carrying today.

What's the ONE song you can't hear without thinking of them?

A familiar song can suddenly bring back a person, place, or moment. Music can make us smile, cry, remember, and feel connected.

“Who checks on the person everyone else depends on?”

The “strong one” may be supporting everyone else while quietly struggling too. Strong people deserve space to cry, rest, talk, and receive support.

SEPTEMBER 11, 2001
We Remember. We Honor. We Choose Compassion.

Patriot Day is a time to remember the lives lost, honor those who responded and served, and reflect on the strength communities can show during unimaginable loss.

“Don't just ask once.”

“You good?”

“Yeah.”

“No, really... how are you?”

Sometimes people don't open up the first time they're asked. A genuine follow-up like, “No, really, how are you?” can create space for an honest conversation.

When emotions feel intense, pause and notice what you can see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. Focusing on your surroundings can help you reconnect with the present moment.
