Bird of the Day: Western Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) #birdoftheday #botd #westerncattleegret #cattleegret #bubulcusibis #birdsoftheworld #birds #birdbrainerapp #birdbrainer | birdbrainer.app

A compact white bird standing upright among small purple wildflowers in dry grass, with a pale buff- orange wash on the crown and upper breast, a sturdy yellow-orange bill, yellow eye, and pale yellowish legs, against a dark out-of-focus background

Originally native to sub-Saharan Africa, the Western Cattle Egret has spread to become one of the most widespread herons in the world, colonising the Americas, Australia, southern Europe, and many oceanic islands over the past century. Associates closely with cattle and other large animals, catching insects disturbed from the ground; in breeding plumage, the bill and legs briefly flush orange-red and buff plumes adorn the head, breast, and mantle
