Here’s a fang blenny peeking out of an encrusted bottle. Don't let that goofy smile fool you - they pack a venomous bite for defense! The venom drops makes the predator's muscles go limp, letting the blenny swim right out of its mouth!

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen! Recently, we published a fascinating article on the Peacock Blenny. The Peacock Blenny is a species of fish known for its elongated appearance, & fleshy crest. They are native to the Mediterranean, as well as the North Atlantic, & occupy shallow waters between 0 & 10 meters. They may be seen along rocky shorelines, intertidal zones, harbours, & coastal man-made structures. Individuals are fiercely territorial, & protective over their homes as well as their young.

The most obliging #fish at Mill Bay #Salcombe is the Shanny (Lipophrys pholis). See how the colour differs of the one on sand compared to those on rocks. Basically they're chameleons; as they settle into a new environment, hormonal & visual feedback systems adjust the pigments to blend in. #blenny

At #BlackpoolSands #Devon plenty of usual fish, Atlantic Pollock (Pollachius pollachius, in the cod family) & Shanny (Lipophrys pholis); especially like the expression of the ♂️ in black breeding colours which he has taken on to attract a ♀️ & is now likely guarding his nest. #fish #blenny #marinelife

At Elberry Cove, delighted to meet this huge Tompot Blenny (Parablennius gattorugine), with its OTT antlers, as well as the ubiquitous Corkwing Wrasse (Symphodus melops) & young Atlantic Pollock (Pollachius pollachius). #MarineLife #Blenny #Teamfish #fish #nature #UKWildife #Fishes #wrasse

Of course at Elberry Cove there is an abundance of characterful Shannies (Lipophrys pholis) in all their rich variety of colouration & pattern; like rockskippers they can survive out of water.

Returning to Elberry Cove, 3 years later, on 26 June, delighted to witness this argy-bargy between 2 Montagu’s Blenny (Coryphoblennius galerita), the unicorns of the #UK blenny world, having only a single fleshy flap as head adornment, now spreading N & E from SW stronghold. #Fish #blenny #MySwim 🧵
