Hello Ladies & Gentlemen! We are proud to announce that we have officially published our second installment in our Tales From The Baltic article series! Today’s article focuses on the numerous dead zones in the baltic sea, why they are there, how they form, & what their consequences are.

The area of the central Baltic Sea covering (as of 2024) approximately 70,000 square kilometers is considered the largest human-induced oxygen dead zone. The second largest is located in the Gulf of Mexico, yet it is 3 times smaller than the largest one. However, despite this fact, few people know of its existence, and the importance of preventing it from expanding. Here, we will break down the causes behind the formation of oxygen-depleted areas and the consequences that follow.

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen! Recently, we published a fascinating article about the career, life, & brilliance of Robert T. Paine.

Robert T. Paine was an American marine ecologist, zoologist, & author. He is best known for coining the term “keystone species”, a phenomenon which occurs when a species is important to an ecosystem than its relative abundance might imply.

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen! Recently, one of our science writers contributed a fascinating article all about the perplexing Anomalocaris! One of the strangest animals to ever live that supersedes the exotic platypus or the virtually invincible tardigrade was Anomalocaris canadensis, often simply referred to as Anomalocaris. Its scientific name, Anomalocaris, translates to “unlike other shrimp” from Greek, with canadensis translating to “from Canada” from Latin. This arthropod roamed the oceans and was a major predator, growing up to six feet long—longer than the average adult human male! Anomalocaris is part of the phylum Arthropoda, which includes isopods such as sand fleas, which you have most likely encountered on a fun trip to the beach.

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen! Recently, we published an intriguing article on the oceans surrounding the city of Trieste, Italy.

Trieste’s coastlines boast brilliant biodiversity, from Fan Mussels (Atrina fragilis), to Peacock Blennies (Salaria pavo). Thousands of species large & small call the waters surrounding Trieste their home. As a result of these robust ecosystems, an eco-tourism economy has developed. Coastal walks, snorkelling, boat excursions, & scuba diving are all available at the UNESCO MaB Miramare Reserve.

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen! Recently, we published the latest installment in our Disasters at Sea article series. This month’s feature focuses on how climate change is affecting Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. For thousands of years, ocean currents have flowed around the globe, influencing weather patterns and shaping ecosystems as they go. This global conveyor belt has a “motor” called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) that drives our currents, but climate change is weakening it. It may be surprising that global warming impacts ocean currents, but the warmer our planet gets, the more likely our dynamic ocean and weather patterns will shift. We thank science writer Emily Cohen for contributing this article.

#oceans #fisheries #marinebiology #marinescience #oceanlife #marinelife #informationalgraphic #nonprofit #nonprofitorganization #sciencenonprofit #madebyhumans #fyp

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen! In collaboration with our brilliant Social Media Volunteers, we created a series of informational graphics on sustainable fisheries. Our final graphic focuses on some of the ways that YOU can be sustainable in your diet when it comes to seafood.

One of the ways to do your part in creating the push for sustainable seafood practices in fisheries is to be more sustainable in your diet. One way to do this is to shop locally in order to support your local businesses and the communities they support. Shopping locally also helps you develop a relationship with local fish mongers, allowing for more traceability. It is important to ensure the products you purchase are traceable, meaning you know where the fish was sourced from. There are several resources for this such as friendofthesea.com and Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch. These websites are great resources that list out products that offer sustainably sourced seafood and companies that are contributing to marine conservation.

Another factor to be mindful of when attempting to stay on a sustainable seafood diet is to avoid overfished species. To stay informed, doing research on websites by organizations such as NOAA Fisheries and World Wildlife Fund can keep you updated on the fish that are at risk. Purchasing products that are MSC or ASC approved is also a more convenient way to ensure that the products are sustainable. Both organizations set the standard on making sure that the fisheries are leaving enough fish in the water and ensuring that the fish farms are protecting the environment, treating the fish well, and supporting local workers.
