Winter at Yosemite Falls

As Ive written about in many of my images Yosemite National Park is truly one of the most magical places on earth in my humble opinion.

Winter At Yosemite Falls

A soft winter hush settles over Yosemite Valley as the great waterfall emerges through drifting veils of cloud. Fresh snow clings to the granite like powdered sugar, brightening every ledge and ridge, while the falls themselves plunge in a pale, silken ribbon that glows against the storm‑washed rock. The air feels cold and clean — that crisp, metallic scent of recent snowfall — and the clearing mist wraps the entire scene in a quiet, luminous stillness that makes the valley feel both immense and intimate at once.

Half Dome Winter

Here in the meadow in the winter with a fresh snow covering the ground is very quite and peaceful. I could sit here for hours and just watch as the winter clouds blow past Half Dome.

Half Dome Winter

Half Dome rises like a silent giant in the clearing storm, its granite face washed in cold, silvery light. Fresh snow clings to every branch in the meadow below, softening the world into a hushed, white stillness. Wisps of winter cloud drift past the summit, revealing and concealing it in slow, breath like motions that make the entire valley feel alive.

Up The Creek

The creek tumbles through sun‑warmed granite in a bright, frothy rush, its icy water catching glints of silver as it threads between moss‑lined boulders. You can almost hear the crisp roar and feel the cool mist rising from the cascade. The scene radiates wild Yosemite energy—an immersive, nature‑driven artwork that instantly transforms a room with movement, texture, and mountain freshness.

Enchanted Valley in Black and White
The infamous Tunnel View photograph of Yosemite Valley. I've had many people comment to me that this reminds them of something from Ansel Adams.

Enchanted Valley in Black and White

The valley opens before you like a breath held in winter—quiet, immense, and carved from shadow and light. Snow clings to the granite walls in soft, powdery veils, giving the stone a cold, velvety texture you can almost feel beneath your fingertips. A hush seems to rise from the earth itself, the kind of silence that carries weight, as if the whole landscape is exhaling in slow motion.
Bridalveil Falls pours down the right side of the frame , a pale ribbon of water dissolving into mist before it reaches the valley floor. Even in black and white, you sense the chill of that spray—the way it would prickle against your skin, the way its movement adds a living pulse to the stillness around it. The Native American lore about its mist blessing those who breathe it with good fortune in marriage lingers like a whisper in the air. The Native Americans believed that breathing in the mist of this waterfall would increase the chance for marriage.
To the left, the massive base of El Capitan rises like a monolith forged from iron and ice . Its sheer vertical face feels almost otherworldly, a towering presence that dominates the valley with quiet authority. In monochrome, the granite’s texture becomes even more dramatic—deep grooves, subtle fractures, and smooth planes catching the faint winter light.
Fog drifts through the valley floor, softening the trees into ghostly silhouettes.
The entire scene carries that unmistakable Yosemite winter mood—unpredictable weather, shifting clouds, and the sense that nature is composing its own artwork moment by moment. In black and white, the drama intensifies. Light becomes sculptural. Shadows become poetry. And the valley, timeless and immense, feels both familiar and enchanted, as if you’ve stepped into a world where silence has texture and the cold has its own kind of warmth.

Enchanted Valley

Yosemite Valley and more specifically, Yosemite Tunnel Viewis one of my most favorite places to sit and watch the world go by. I could sit here for hours watching people and nature both.

Enchanted Valley

The scene opens like a breath held in winter—Yosemite Valley wrapped in drifting fog and soft cloud layers, the air so cold you can almost feel it tightening across your cheeks. The granite walls rise like ancient guardians, their sheer faces muted by the mist, giving the entire valley a dreamlike hush.
To the right, Bridalveil Fall spills in a white ribbon, its plunge softened by distance and vapor, yet still carrying that unmistakable sense of motion—water tumbling, crashing, sending a faint roar that you can almost hear beneath the quiet. The fall glows subtly against the darker stone, a vertical streak of brightness in the muted palette.
Beyond it, The Three Brothers emerge like spectral silhouettes, their tiered forms rising through the shifting fog. They feel both massive and weightless, as if the clouds are lifting them skyward. The atmosphere is thick with moisture—the kind that beads on your eyelashes and settles into your lungs with a cool heaviness.
The valley floor below is hidden, swallowed by the rolling fog that moves like breath across the landscape. Light filters through high clouds, creating a soft silver wash over the scene, the kind of illumination that makes every detail feel quiet, reverent, and suspended in time.
There’s a sense of stillness and grandeur, the kind that makes you instinctively lower your voice. The storm has passed, but its presence lingers—the air charged, the sky layered, the world freshly washed. It’s the kind of winter moment where nature feels both immense and intimate, inviting you to stand still and simply absorb the beauty.

Winter Falls

This photo was taken from the swinging bridge that crosses the Merced River south of Yosemite Falls in Mid-Winter in Yosemite Valley. One of my favorite times to be in the valley.

Winter Falls

This image shows a breathes cold, quiet Yosemite winter. From the swinging bridge, the Upper Falls drops in a long white ribbon, its plunge crisp and powerful against the granite walls. The air feels sharp, the kind that stings your lungs a little, and the waterfall’s winter beard—ice clinging to the rock overnight—adds a frosted texture that makes the whole face of the cliff look ancient and weathered.
Below, the Merced River lies still enough to become a perfect mirror, doubling the falls and the muted winter sky in reflections so clean they almost look like a second world opening beneath the bridge. The calm water carries that hushed winter feeling—no wind, no rush—just a glassy surface holding light and shadow with equal tenderness.

Golden Falls

This image was captured down on the valley floor of Yosemite National Park. I had found a somewhat isolated dogwood tree alongside a small spring on the side of the road. The dogwood leaves had all turned golden as it was late fall.
There are a couple of evergreen trees framing the dogwood and there is some snow on some boulders in the background.
This is an abstract image. There is an appearance of movement as the whole image was purposely blurred with in camera movement. This gives the image an appearance that the leaves are coming down in a cascade.

Dogwood On The River
It's mid spring in Yosemite National Park. The snow has melted, falls are flowing, and animals are running wild in the park and the dogwoods are blooming in the valley.

Dogwood On The River

The blossoms glow like small lanterns against the deep, shadowed current of the Merced River. Their white petals—broad, smooth, almost luminous—seem to float in the warm Yosemite air, catching every bit of soft spring light. You can almost feel the cool breath rising from the river below, a gentle contrast to the sun‑warmed branches where the dogwoods bloom in full, circular clusters.
The scene carries that unmistakable mid‑spring energy of Yosemite—snowmelt roaring through the valley, the falls at their wildest, the air rich with moisture and movement. Against this backdrop, the dogwoods stand serene and bright, their pale faces illuminated intentionally while the water behind them falls into velvety darkness for dramatic contrast. It feels like a quiet moment carved out of a season overflowing with motion—light touching petals, shadows deepening the river, and the valley humming with life.

Bridge To Obscurity

A ribbon of the Golden Gate Bridge rises out of a world made of fog, its orange steel glowing like a warm ember against the cool, silvery haze. The air feels thick and hushed, as if sound itself is swallowed by the drifting mist. The roadway vanishes into white nothingness, creating a sensation of standing at the edge of the known world—where structure meets atmosphere, and the familiar becomes mysterious.

Storm Brewing

This has to be my favorite view of nature in all the world. This is located on State Highway 41 and is one of the first views that most of the visitors to the park will see of Yosemite Valley.

Storm Brewing

This scene in Storm Brewing photograph unfurls like a slow‑moving breath of the valley itself—Yosemite revealing and concealing its landmarks in a single, moody gesture. From the overlook, the air feels heavy, saturated with the metallic scent of oncoming rain and the cool mineral tang rising from the Merced River far below. A soft, shifting fog drapes itself through the valley floor, moving like a living veil that blurs the familiar contours of Half Dome and Clouds Rest, leaving only hints of their silhouettes behind the storm’s curtain.

To the right, Bridalveil Fall emerges from the mist—its white ribbon of water glowing against the dark granite, the roar softened by distance until it becomes a low, steady hum, like nature’s heartbeat. Behind it, the angular peaks of the Three Brothers rise in layered succession, their triangular shapes sharpening and fading as the fog drifts past. Behind Bridalveil Fall in this picture is the first of the Three Brothers. The three Brothers is a series of rock formations with triangular shaped peaks lined up behind Bridalveil Falls.

On the left, El Capitan stands immovable and immense, its sheer vertical face catching the muted storm light. The granite looks cold and slick, almost metallic, as if the cliff itself is absorbing the tension in the air. Even from afar, you can imagine the silence of its walls—an austere stillness that contrasts with the restless movement of the weather around it.

The entire valley feels suspended in a moment between calm and upheaval. The fog curls through the trees like smoke, carrying the earthy scent of wet pine and distant river water. The atmosphere is charged yet serene, the kind of storm that doesn’t shout but whispers—letting Yosemite’s vastness speak through shifting light, muted color, and the quiet drama of nature preparing to change.

Grace Cathedral Starburst
In San Francisco up on Nob Hill sits this grand cathedral known as Grace Cathedral. This image was captured using a tripod with the camera pointing straight up at the majestic ceiling.

Garce Cathedral Starburst

This photograph radiates upward like a burst of divine light—an architectural star exploding from the heart of Grace Cathedral’s vaulted ceiling. The camera’s perspective, aimed straight into the heavens, transforms the gothic ribs and arches into a luminous mandala of stone. Each beam of the starburst feels almost tactile, as if you could reach up and run your fingers along the cool, centuries‑old lines of carved geometry.

Light pours through the structure in fine, shimmering threads, catching edges of the ceiling and turning them into glowing spokes. The symmetry is so precise it feels musical—like a chord held perfectly in tune. There’s a sense of stillness, yet also a quiet hum of energy, as though the cathedral itself is breathing.

The stone overhead carries a soft, dusky warmth, the kind that smells faintly of old wood, candle smoke, and time. The starburst effect adds a sharp, crystalline brilliance, creating a contrast between the grounded weight of the architecture and the airy radiance of the light. It’s both intimate and immense—an upward pull that makes your chest expand, as if you’re standing beneath something sacred and alive.

The composition turns the ceiling into a celestial event, a moment where craftsmanship, light, and perspective converge into something that feels almost spiritual.

Light pours through the soaring interior of the Cathedral Basilica, washing the stone and gilded details in a soft, heavenly glow. The Indiana limestone and Colorado granite surfaces feel cool and ancient, their textures carrying more than a century of craftsmanship. Ornate arches rise like sculpted waves, guiding the eye upward toward intricate carvings and warm golden accents that shimmer gently in the ambient light. The space feels hushed, almost reverent — every surface reflecting a quiet, sacred stillness that wraps around you the moment you step inside. The photograph captures that serenity, letting you almost smell the faint trace of polished wood and old stone lingering in the air.
