Is there a name in English for this kind of puppet: veli-handpuppen.com/collections/...? Or do I turn it into a jack in the box? #amtranslating

Language pals: I need a word/ short phrase that combines sneakiness, shamelessness & stealing. Context: a teenage girl from a poor family who uses shop samples to do her makeup, and so often that the sales assistants know her – so it also needs to be feminine-skewed. TIA!

Do I mean "flick", "shift" and "count"?

No, PerfectIt, I do not! 🤣

The final round of edits!

I am *so* excited about this book – it is one of the most gorgeous books I have ever read, and it was a pleasure and a privilege to translate it!

Photo. A heap of papers and a book – the book, in Slovak, is Kornélie by Beata Balogová. The cover is pale blue with the wording in coral pink, and an image of a sprig of forget-me-nots in outline, with a woman's face visible behind some of the flowers, extends across it. The heap of papers contain the English translation. The top page has the words "Kornelias, by Beata Balogová, translated from the Slovak by Isabel Stainsby" handwritten in red. On the second page, the words "PROLOGUE" and "A story grows in every family. A family with no story is scattered..." are just visible.

Back at my desk after a long weekend away and starting the final round of edits (barring any feedback from the author, which hasn't yet arrived) of my current book.

We need more polarization. We should all start separating ourselves into sides based on how we clasp our hands. I'm phenotype R. How about you?

It's been a busy translation day that I spent mostly learning about Maslow's hierarchy of needs and then translating in-depth explanations about it.

I feel like I've learned a second undergraduate degree's worth of knowledge on this project and it's not quite done yet 😂

„Měly jsme štěstí.“
Translation: "We were lucky."

But... the Czech makes it clear that "we" here are all female. There's no way of rendering this in English. If I say "we women", that implies that at least one man was not lucky... and the text does not support this.

Listening to my current current book as (this time) the penultimate stage of editing. I've just had "Street John's Wort" in a list of plants!

Done. Yes, it was depressing, but I can at least cross it off my to-do list. Though there are so many other things on said list that it will barely make a difference...
