Dick hoped beyond hope that there was at least some truth to what Jason said. He'd feel like an idiot playing mediator while this all played out if it turned out Jason had kidnapped a baby.

He didn't know though. Something in his gut told him to trust Jason on this one. Dick hated to think his gut could be wrong about something this big.

He went upstairs to what used to be Jason's room. Sure enough, Bruce was standing in there, looking down at the empty crib.

He stood upright when he noticed Dick, schooling his face into something stern and passive. "Is everyone alright?" he asked.

"They're all doing their thing," Dick assured him. "How about you?"

Bruce shook his head. "What about me?"

"How are you holding up? This is a pretty big deal. Always thought it'd be me who accidentally knocked someone up first."

Bruce's lips twitched into something like a smile. Bingo. "That thought did cross my mind, too, I have to admit."

Dick laughed, head falling back. "She's a sweet kid, huh?"

Claude didn’t have too many regrets, but this was one: the things he’d said for what he thought was his own protection, while the soft fleshy parts of him had trembled in fear. He was trembling again now, heart quivering within his ribs.
“Don’t go,” he said, only just loud enough to hear. “I never wanted you to leave, I just…I didn’t want you to stay for the wrong reasons.”
Ashe laughed weakly. “I tried staying away, Goddess help me, but I can’t.”
“Didn’t try too hard.”
“I wasn’t going to run away just because a man didn’t feel the same way about me as I do about him.”
Claude’s enjoyment of Ashe’s defensive tone was tempered by a swell of mingled shame and euphoria. He had a feeling this dizziness would be with him for a while. “I was pretty obtuse, wasn’t I.”
He laid his forehead on Ashe’s shoulder. The relief of having someone on which to rest even a part of his weight was staggering in its newness. Each breath loosened the cage around his lungs. “Do you think Nemesis will go easy on us if we pretend we’re not with Rhea?”
Ashe sighed, but his shoulders shook with silent mirth. And really, the idea of Ashe doing any such thing was laughable. “I suppose there’s only one way to find out.”
Claude grinned. He lifted his head to see a twin smile across Ashe’s face. “You’d really defect so easily? You’re even slipperier than I thought.”
“Well, you’d have to give me a very compelling reason.” His thumb traced an arc across Claude’s thigh. “But I might consider it.”
