It is the birthday, in 1902, of English publisher Allen Lane.
He and his brothers founded Penguin Books, bringing books to market in the less expensive paperback format.
Penguin's origin story begins with Lane's visit to Agatha Christie in 1934. 🧵
In Book 2 Thornton adds, 'The fuller description is related in my book of meditations on this subject and also of the First Book of My Life, page 203'. A descendant named Comber seems to have had access to that untraced book of meditations in 1832 as he discusses it at some length.

Two decorated examples of binder’s waste: one a late eighteenth-century/early nineteenth-century printed fragment and the other a sixteenth-century manuscript leaf.

#bookhistory exciting day, getting to see Hamilton College’s copy of Wheatley’s Poems. The Contents pages—at the end—always struck me as oddly placed. Why is it like this? Or is more common than I realized?
