Sharing a few Los Angeles items as seen at yesterday's Rare Books LA #Antiquarian Book Fair at #UnionStationLA:

🌲: Clifton’s Cafeteria pamphlet (1950)
🖼️: Ray Bradbury painting (1949)
🍽️: Brown Derby cookbook (1949)
📜: Prudent Beaudry’s indenture manuscript (1878)

Colorful Clifton’s pamphlet from Steve Turner Antiquarian's booth. The cover features tropical plants and flowers with a cascading waterfall all set against a cobalt blue background. This is no longer available because…well, I took this one home. :)

Ray Bradbury painting of a yellow Los Angeles streetcar, as seen at the Locus Solus Rare Books booth.

Description of the tempura painting reads: "Nighttime cityscape depicting images of Los Angeles, with the central image of a streetcar filled with passengers and all around lighted signs (Bond Pants, Follies, Tivoli Theatre, Beer, Parking, Wine, Ice) a lamppost, a telephone booth, and a leafy tree. Signed "R. Bradbury - July, 1949" at the bottom. In a 2009 interview with the LA Times, Bradbury recalled his early exposure to art and stated that "painting has been part of my life since I was a child. My artwork doesn't inspire my writing, it's my writing that inspires my artwork."

Brown Derby Cookbook as seen as Crooked House Books & Paper booth, which had a wonderful collection of California cookbooks. The cover of the cookbook features the famous large Brown Derby hat (wearing a tiny chef's hat) situated on a street intersection, surrounded by a few palm trees, tourists with camera, and pets, all set against a yellow background.

Behind the cookbook is the b/w catalog "California Cookbooks from the collection of Julia Perrin Hindley" (2026). The cover of the catalog shows what appears to be Hindley's bookplate.

While at Johnson Rare Books & Archive Booth, I saw this page that was part of a manuscript indenture for the transfer of 21 Southern California properties by Prudent Beaudry (13th mayor of Los Angeles) to his brother in 1878. The handwritten words begin: “This Indenture, made the 18th day of November, A.D. 1878 between Prudent Beaudry, of the City and County of Los Angeles, State of California, the party of the first part, and Victor Beaudry, of the City of Montreal in the Province of Quebec in the Dominion of Canada, the part of the second part…”

Rare first printing of the Statement of Patrick Sellar, one of most reviled figures in Scottish history, for his brutal role in the highland clearances.
