We have almost reached the end of the #nativeplants in my garden, but first I have to mention two species I tried to grow this year from seeds that did not end up germinating. I’ll leave the seeds out over winter (stratification) and see if they germinate next spring.

The first is painted trillium.

Two seed trays in a water tray in bare soil labelled “Trillium sp.” For painted trillium and red trillium seeds were planted in separate trays, which got spilled together, and so the two trays contain a mix of both species’ seeds.A painted trillium plant in a mossy forest in Digby county. It has three leaves and three petals that are white with a splash of dark pink/purple near the centre.Painted trillium (Trillium undulatum)
• Native range in Canada: ON, QC, NB, PE, NS
• Native habitat: forests
• Soil: medium - moist, well-drained, nutrient-rich
• Light: full sun - full shade
• Height: 20 - 40 cm
• Blooms: white and pink-purple, May - June
• Ecological benefits: Early season flowering provides nectar and pollen for pollinators such as flies and beetles. Seeds are dispersed by ants, who eat the fatty and protein-rich portion of the seed.
• Notes:

Oh, the age-old gardening question:

Is it better to briefly see it a flower before wildlife consumes it, or to never have seen it at all?

(Or something like that)

Imagine my surprise when Helianthus ‘Carine’ I planted in August 2024 finally shot up & bloomed this year. Since it came from small 2-man operation, I looked through their other offerings—guessing it can only be mislabelled #NativePlants Helianthus microcephalus. Okay!

#gardening #bloomscrolling 🌱

Obviously much taller than Carine’s 4-5 feet range and with small rich yellow blooms instead of soft buttery yellow larger rays.A closeup of the long skinny foliage which also matches H. microcephalus rather than ‘Carine’.

An Oak Tree a Day
Overcast mornings give off a certain sense of fall on the horizon but nothing like the image that this Quercus lobata (valley oak) will create when the leaves have fallen & its skeleton of twists & turns is on display. California #nativePlants #nature lobata=lobe Ear shaped leaves

Went and visited an interesting garden center in Saint-Eustache, Quebec today. An amazing contrast between super rare and cool #NativePlants and incredibly #InvasivePlants. Weird.
