Everyone talks about absence from work. But if you don’t show up for work, it’s professional misconduct and you can be fired for it. What we’re talking about is absence from work, which is justified by a sick leave, i.e. due to illness. To speak of absence from work without mentionning illness is to question the competence of the doctor who is supposed to make sick leaves without cause, and to deny the suffering of those who are absent from work. We also hear the expression “call in sick”, as if we had a choice, as if it were something we could do without cause. Either you’re sick, or you’re able to go to work. It’s up to the doctor to judge, not the patient. The image of the absentee is linked to that of a deserter who would compromise the outcome of the war. There’s also the suffering of those who can’t take a break and hurt themselves even more. They continue to work when they should be at home, because of a moral rather than a medical judgment. They’re afraid they won’t get their contract renewed, won’t get a promotion or will be fired on the grounds that they’re lazy. They are made to feel guilty because others have done the work for them. But in the case of sick leave, it’s the social security system that pays the salary. Why doesn’t the employer hire replacements? The work overload transferred to the other employees results in a cascade of sick leave, as the overwork makes them ill. In addition, there are cases of sick leave absences due to a lack of flexibility on the part of the employer. Health appointments must be guaranteed. If the employer refuses to make arrangements, a sick leave is required. Employers have are responsible for providing a non-toxic work environment. Some people get sick because the pressure is too high, because they are being harassed or because their situation is too precarious and their contract too uncertain. On entend partout parler de l’absentéisme au travail. Or si on ne vient pas à son travail, c’est une faute professionnelle et on peut être licencié pour cela. On parle plutôt de l’absence au travail qui est cautionné par un arrêt de travail; donc du à une maladie. Parler d’absentéisme au travail c’est douter de la compétence du médecin qui ferait des arrêts de travail sans raisons et c’est nier la souffrance de ceux qui sont arrêtés. On entend également l’expression de “se mettre en arrêt maladie”, comme si on avait le choix, comme si c’était quelque chose que la personne pourrait faire sans raisons. Soit on est malade, soit on est capable d’aller au travail. C’est au médecin de juger, pas au patient. Il y a une imagerie de l’absent vu comme un déserteur qui compromettrait le résultat de la guerre. Il y a aussi la souffrance de ceux qui ne peuvent pas s’arrêter et qui se font encore plus mal. Ils continuent à être au travail alors qu’ils devraient être à la maison à cause d’un jugement moral au lieu d’un jugement médical. Ils ont peur de ne pas avoir leur contrat renouvelé, de ne pas avoir une promotion ou de se faire licencier sous prétexte qu’ils seraient alors des fainéants. On les fait culpabiliser parce que les autres ont fait le travail à la place du malade. Or dans le cas d’un arrêt maladie, c’est l’assurance sociale qui paie le salaire. Pourquoi l’employeur n’embauche pas des remplaçants? La surcharge de travail reportée sur les autres employés produit en cascade des arrêts maladie car la surcharge de travail les rend malades. De plus, il y a des absences d’arrêt maladie qui sont dues au manque de flexibilité de l’employeur. Les rendez-vous de santé doivent être assurés. Si l’employeur refuse des arrangements, il faut un arrêt maladie. L’employeur a comme responsabilité de fournir un environnement de travail non toxique.
