Like #FannieLouHamer, who said, “I am sick of symbolic things—we are fighting for our lives,” we are sick of symbolic changes that leave policing’s core functions and daily impacts untouched. -Mariame Kaba and Andrea J. Ritchie, Why We Don’t Say “Reform the Police”

The image features a grid of vibrant and muted colours in a chequerboard pattern. Various hues blend seamlessly across the grid, creating a textured and visually engaging composition.

Moving to the upper registers of the fictive architecture, we find this rearing #centaur. It must represent a statue filling up the illusionistic space with a piece of virtuoso #mosaic work, though its lifelike colouring blurs the line with a living creature.

DETAIL OF A CENTAUR. HALL OF THE GREAT MOSAIC, 64-98 CE.

A close view of a fragmentary mosaic section from the upper registers of the illusionistic architecture, featuring a rearing centaur. The figure is positioned as if it were a statue filling up the fictive space, a piece of virtuoso mosaic work rather than a structural element. The creature's front legs are raised, while its hind legs are anchored below, its human torso twisting slightly. Despite its likely sculptural role within the scene, the centaur is rendered with lifelike polychromy, using pale tesserae for the human torso and head, and darker tones for the equine body. It is flanked by columns, the rightmost of which features intricate golden scrolling tendrils, continuing the elaborate decorative scheme. The surrounding plaster is heavily degraded, yet the figure itself survives in remarkable detail against the rough wall.

For #MosaicMonday, a colossal discovery. This is the Great #Mosaic, which I visited last Tuesday beneath the #BathsofTrajan in #Rome. Though fragmentary, this wall mosaic almost defies comprehension due to its quality and vastness. Let's have a look. #AncientBluesky 🏺🧵

HALL OF THE GREAT MOSAIC, 64-98 CE. MUSEO DELLE TERME DI TRAIANO

A steep downward perspective into a subterranean space beneath heavy brick vaulting. A vast vertical wall dominates the centre, covered in the remains of a monumental mosaic. This hall measures 10 by 15 metres and is 12 metres tall. The ground level has not yet been excavated, and the lower three metres, still buried, were originally faced with marble slabs. At the centre of the long wall, part of a rectangular niche is visible, which must once have contained a statue. It is far too large to be part of a private domus and is built on lands expropriated by Nero for the Domus Aurea, whose main Oppian pavilion is nearby. The gigantic size and high quality of the surviving mosaic suggest an imperial commission, but of what? And was it a Neronian building or a Flavian or Domitianic one? At the very bottom right edge, a modern blue metal railing provides a sense of the staggering scale.

I love this tile mosaic lining the edge of floor of a Victorian tenement close on the Southside of Glasgow. It's not a feature I'd come across before yesterday.

It's a tile flower made from lots and lots of coloured pieces called a moh-zay-ik!

Two Sylvanian Families babies are walking on and looking at a mosaic flower pattern made from cream, blue-grey and deep red tiles. The background and centre of the flower petals is cream, the curled petals and centre of the flower is red and a border and accent tiles in the gap between each of the petals is bluw-grey. Pickle, a grey striped cat baby, stands on on petal staring at the centre. Standing on an adjacent petal, also staring at the centre, is a tiny cradled black cat baby. It's Reggie!

Pictured is an 8th-century Maya anthropomorphic jade mosaic vessel unearthed from Burial 196 in the ancient city of Tikal, Guatemala.
The artifact is built over a wooden core.
Artisans attached thin jadeite plates using tiny jade pins to create a seamless mosaic surface.
The detailed face and elaborate headdress represent the Maya Maize God (Ixiim). This deity symbolizes agricultural renewal, rebirth, and the eternal cycle of life.
This luxury object dates to the Late Classic period. It is linked to the reign of the powerful Tikal king Yik'in Chan K'awiil.
You can view similar royal collections at the Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología in Guatemala City.
