A positive legume panel is still usually not a long list of forbidden foods Here is the reassurance, kept in its true proportion.

A positive legume panel is still usually not a long list of forbidden foods. Here is the reassurance, kept in its true proportion. Chickpea cross-sensitizes on testing with peanut, but that pairing is mostly a positive blood test, not a real reaction: a peanut-allergic child is not automatically chickpea-allergic, and a chickpea-allergic child is not automatically peanut-allergic. Literature suggests that having one legume allergy does not mean a child must avoid all legumes, and that the broad legume panel usually looks scarier than the diet needs to be; confirm with your allergist before introducing any legume rather than removing it on the panel alone. The point that holds both halves together: which legumes are actually off the plate is decided by history and testing, food by food, with lentil and pea treated as the genuine cluster question and peanut treated as the usually-not-clinical question.

If my child is allergic to peanut, can they react to lupin?. Yes, and this is the one to take seriously. Lupin is the legume most likely to cross-react with peanut, the reaction can be a true anaphylaxis, and because a peanut-allergic child may never have knowingly eaten lupin, it can happen on a first exposure. Ask your allergist about lupin specifically and treat it as a real risk, not an afterthought (see Cross-reactivity).

Will my child outgrow tuna allergy? Fish allergy, including tuna, is among the more persistent IgE-mediated food allergies and is less commonly outgrown than egg or milk (Ruethers 2018, Sicherer and Sampson 2018).

Will my child outgrow tuna allergy?. Fish allergy, including tuna, is among the more persistent IgE-mediated food allergies and is less commonly outgrown than egg or milk (Ruethers 2018, Sicherer and Sampson 2018). No reliable tuna-specific outgrow percentage is published, so this page gives the qualitative picture rather than a fabricated figure: resolution is uncommon and the allergy is often lifelong. For a parvalbumin-poor fish like tuna, the more useful question is often not outgrowing over time but whether your child already tolerates tuna at baseline (a cod-allergic child sometimes does), which is a supervised-challenge question, not a wait-and-retest one.

The School’s Role

The school’s role in managing students with food allergies can seem daunting, especially for districts and schools currently that do not have a food allergy policy or guidelines in place.

Is sunflower seed butter safe for a nut-free or peanut-allergic child?. Not if the child is allergic to sunflower. Sunflower seed butter (SunButter and similar) is peanut-free and tree-nut-free, which is exactly why it is a popular substitute, but nut-free does not mean seed-free: it is itself a seed allergen. A peanut-allergic child who is not also sunflower-allergic may be fine with it, but a sunflower-allergic child is not made safe by a product being chosen because it is nut-free (see Hidden sources).

Is macadamia allergy less severe than other nut allergies? On average, yes, and the allergy is often isolated rather than broad, which is genuinely encouraging.

Is macadamia allergy less severe than other nut allergies?. On average, yes, and the allergy is often isolated rather than broad, which is genuinely encouraging. But that is a population average, not a promise about any one child: documented anaphylaxis to macadamia does occur, so a confirmed macadamia allergy still means strict avoidance and carrying epinephrine if your allergist prescribes it (see Severity).

The latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2025–2030) include a major update for infant feeding.

Early introduction of peanut and other allergenic foods is now recommended to help reduce the risk of food allergy.

Where does sunflower hide?. Most of all in the "allergy-friendly" aisle, because the nut-free swap is often sunflower seed butter. Sunflower also turns up in granola, trail mix, seeded and multigrain breads, energy and protein bars, salad and yogurt toppings, sunflower lecithin, and cold-pressed or toasted sunflower oils. Because sunflower is not a labeled major allergen, you have to read the full ingredient list (see Hidden sources).

Stock Epinephrine in Schools

Many states have stock epinephrine laws in place that allow schools to keep a “stock” supply of epinephrine on schools grounds.

Salmon: which protein your child reacts to changes everything. Salmon is not one thing to the immune system. It is a handful of proteins, and which one your child reacts to shapes how serious the allergy tends to be and even whether cooking changes anything. For salmon there is one protein that carries most of the weight, and there is also an honest limit to what the blood number can tell you.

The other crustaceans travel with shrimp. Crab, lobster, and crayfish (crawfish) share tropomyosin with shrimp at very high sequence identity, between 91 and 100 percent, and more than three in four people allergic to one crustacean react to the others. The practical rule most allergists use is to treat the whole crustacean group, including crab cakes, lobster, and crawfish boils, as off the list unless a supervised challenge with your allergist says otherwise.

The one cross-reactivity axis that genuinely changes the plate: birch pollen and lightly-processed soy If your child is allergic to birch pollen, there is a real connection to watch.
https://checkeverylabel.com/soy-allergy/
#foodallergy

The one cross-reactivity axis that genuinely changes the plate: birch pollen and lightly-processed soy. If your child is allergic to birch pollen, there is a real connection to watch. The soy protein Gly m 4 is closely related to the main birch-pollen protein, so a birch-pollen-allergic person can react to soy through that overlap, classically as an itchy or tingly mouth (oral allergy syndrome) after lightly-processed soy such as soy milk, soy protein drinks, or edamame. It is usually mild, but with a large dose of lightly-processed concentrated soy protein it can occasionally be more than mild, so it is not something to dismiss outright. If your child has birch-pollen allergy and reacts to soy milk or a soy protein drink, that is the pattern, and it is worth naming to your allergist.

Dust mites share the same protein, which matters for the nose, not the plate Tropomyosin is not only in shellfish. House dust mite carries a homologous tropomyosin, and molluscs cross-react with it.

Dust mites share the same protein, which matters for the nose, not the plate. Tropomyosin is not only in shellfish. House dust mite carries a homologous tropomyosin, and molluscs cross-react with it. For most families this is why a dust-mite-allergic child can test positive to squid without ever having reacted to it, and it is the reason whole-squid tests carry false positives. It also carries one specific caution that lives in the exposure section: a shellfish-allergic child who is a candidate for dust-mite allergy shots should have that overlap discussed first, because the shot extract contains the same protein. The mechanism behind that shared protein lives on the tropomyosin syndrome page.
