Lupin is a caution worth naming. Lupin is another legume, increasingly hidden as "lupin flour" in European and gluten-free baked goods, and it is one of the legumes most likely to cause a genuine reaction in a legume-allergic child rather than just a positive test. A lentil-allergic child should not be assumed to tolerate lupin; if your family encounters lupin flour, treat it as a question for your allergist, not a safe default, because lupin can cause severe reactions and hides in baked goods.

The storage-protein mechanism is the serious one, and it is not reassuring. The almond protein that drives whole-body reactions, Pru du 6, belongs to the same family of heat-stable, digestion-stable storage proteins that drive severe reactions in cashew, walnut, pistachio, and pecan. A positive test to a tree-nut storage protein is a red flag for whole-body reactions, not a minor or reassuring result, and cooking or roasting does not change that. This does not mean an almond-allergic child is automatically allergic to those other nuts. It means that if your child reacts to almond through the storage protein, a positive test to another nut's storage protein deserves to be taken seriously rather than waved off, and it is the allergist who tests and decides nut by nut.

Does a celery allergy mean I am allergic to carrot and spices too? Not necessarily, but it is worth testing rather than assuming.

Does a celery allergy mean I am allergic to carrot and spices too?. Not necessarily, but it is worth testing rather than assuming. Celery is part of a pollen-food pattern that can include related Apiaceae plants and spices (carrot, parsley, fennel, coriander, cumin) and birch-linked foods, especially in birch or mugwort-sensitized people. Which ones actually matter for you is a tested question for your allergist (see Cross-reactivity).

Why isn't mussel listed on the allergy label of a US product?. Because in the US only crustacean shellfish is a required major allergen; molluscs like mussel are not, so a US label is not required to name mussel, and it can hide inside "seafood," "fish stock," or "natural flavoring." Read the full ingredient list, not just the "contains" line. The EU and UK do require molluscs to be declared. See Reading labels.

Which pistachio test markers should I ask for?. Ask your allergist to measure the pistachio storage-protein component Pis v 1 and the near-identical cashew marker Ana o 3, not just whole-pistachio IgE. A positive result to these storage proteins supports the serious, whole-body kind of allergy, read against your child's history rather than as a single number.

For many families, a meal includes more than a fork and knife.

It includes preparation, ingredient checks, and emergency medication close by.

Poppy seed is the one genuine seed cross-reaction. Sesame and poppy seed can cross-react in seed-allergic people. This is a caution, not a reassurance: treat poppy seed as a question to test with your allergist, not a seed to assume is safe. Poppy hides as a topping and as a ground filling in cakes and pastries, where ground poppy in particular has been linked to more severe reactions.

What actually predicts a bad pecan reaction. The strongest population-level predictor of a severe pecan reaction is sensitization to the 2S albumin Car i 1, the protein from the components section (and, by the very high cross-reactivity, the near-identical walnut Jug r 1). A history of a previous severe reaction is the next strongest input. Pecan is storage-protein-dominated, heat-stable, and digestion-stable, which is the mechanistic reason it carries anaphylaxis risk across cooked, roasted, and baked forms. General cofactors (exercise, NSAIDs, alcohol, intercurrent illness) can lower the reaction threshold on a given day, as they can for most food allergens.

Is avocado a common food allergy?. Isolated avocado allergy is uncommon. Most clinically meaningful avocado allergy sits on the latex-fruit link: a person allergic to natural rubber latex can react to avocado, banana, kiwi, and chestnut through a shared protein (Blanco 1994). It is more often described in adults than in young children.

Desserts and confectionery. Pistachio is a core ingredient in baklava and other Middle Eastern and Mediterranean filo desserts, in pistachio gelato and ice cream, and as pistachio paste or cream in pastry fillings and spreads; it also turns up in nougat, halva, and Turkish delight. These are concentrated, high-exposure forms.

A label point that surprises people: refined soybean oil. Highly refined soybean oil contains negligible residual soy protein and is generally tolerated by most soy-allergic people, and in the US it is exempt from allergen labeling on that basis, so you may not even see it flagged as soy. That is not a universal all-clear: the most sensitive individuals can react, and cold-pressed or unrefined ("expeller-pressed," "gourmet") soybean oils are different and can retain protein. Whether your child can have refined soybean oil is an allergist conversation.

It looks safe.

But food allergies aren’t visible and even small exposures can carry serious risk for some individuals.

And why research into diagnosis, prevention, and treatment matters.

"Modified food starch" is usually corn-derived in the US but is frequently wheat-derived in Europe, so the same label term carries different wheat risk depending on where the product was made. When a term is unclear and the manufacturer will not say, treat it as a reason to call the company, not a reason to assume it is safe.
