Unable to contain her emotions any longer, she turns to him, with distressed, soulful eyes. Caught completely off guard, NutJob freezes. For as long as they had known each other she has been the anchor, the one who steered through chaos without blinking. Seeing her now, eyes wide with a raw, agonising vulnerability, is uncharted territory. Reaching out instinctively, his hands hover for a split second before gently holding her by the shoulders. His voice has changed, not his normal pragmatic one, something more gentle, direct, and urgently concerned. “Hey, what’s up?” She doesn’t answer straight away, instead, burying her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking uncontrollably as the dam breaks. “Is this what happiness and meaning is?” she gasps, “we’re doing an emotional juggling act simply to keep onside with our parents?” She wails, “walking a financial tight rope just to stay alive?
