"The Grim American Gothic: The New Regionalism."

In 1930, "American Gothic" captured a stern, unsmiling heartland.
Nearly a century later, this composition echoes that exact aesthetic—trading the rural farmhouse for a Washington balcony.

Morning Sun by Edward Hopper, 1952, Columbus Museum of Art (Ohio)

##ArtHistory #ModernArt #Modernism #Neoclassicism

A woman sits on a bed, facing sunlight coming in from the window. She is wearing a coral-colored dress and her hair is in a simple bun. Her face, in profile, has a contemplative expression.

Hopper's paintings often depict one solitary figure. The loneliness evoked in his paintings create an uncanny urban scene.

The painting may be a reference to Edgar Degas’s Woman at a Window. It is known that his wife Jo gifted him a book on Degas's art before he created Morning Sun. Both Degas's and Hopper's paintings feature a woman whose profile is highlighted by a nearby window.

September's theme: Labor
L. S. LOWRY (1887 - 1976) “Going to Work”, 1943. The Imperial War Museum, London UK.
Lowry captured the industrial landscapes of northern England, where he lived his entire life, with a keen eye and a distinctive style.
#arthistory #art #Labor #Manchester

Lowry captured the industrial landscapes of northern England, where he lived his entire life, with a keen eye and a distinctive style. Factories, mills, streets crowded with stick-like people, railways and sporting events (he was a huge Manchester City Football Club fan) fill his canvases. In “Going to Work”, Lowry’s grey atmosphere emphasizes the monotony and drudgery of going to the same factory day after day; the stylized workers stream in to work from the streets and from two buses on the right. Manchester was a major industrial and manufacturing hub for the British war effort and as such it suffered devastating destruction from frequent German Luftwaffe air raids. Lowry included a couple of barrage balloons above his factory in “Going to Work”; the balloons were supposed to deter the enemy bombardments. Lowry produced a large number of paintings, which sold very well during his lifetime, but he was actually never a full-time artist. His primary job was as a rent collector. He was meticulous about painting every night after work, a discipline he exercised for decades. The factory depicted in this painting was the Mather & Platt plant in Manchester that manufactured engineering equipment; it remained in business until 2019, when it closed for good, and was later demolished.

San Giorgio Maggiore, Twilight by Claude Monet, 1908, National Museum of Wales (Cardiff, Wales, UK)

#ArtHistory #ModernArt
#Impressionism

Light dissolves solid form. A Venetian scene emerges, dominated by the hazy silhouette of San Giorgio Maggiore and its accompanying bell tower, veiled in atmospheric twilight. The water below churns with reflected sky, broken by the dark curves of two gondolas.

Brushstrokes, rapid and dispersed fragment the architectural mass, imbuing it with a shimmering transience. This dispersal of form, this liberation from precise contour, captures the ephemeral nature of late 19th-century urban experience, where industrial progress continually reshaped the visual landscape The indistinctness of the buildings suggests a world less defined by permanence, more by shifting perceptions.

These fluid planes articulate a modernity that questions the very solidity of existence. The dissolving architecture communicates a society grappling with swift change. The water, a restless surface, mirrors this internal dvnamism Light does not merely illuminate; it actively deconstructs.
