September's theme: Labor
SEBASTIÃO SALGADO (1944 - 2025), “Coal Mining, Dhanbad, Bihar, India”, 1989. The Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, US.
#arthistory #art #labor #photography

This photograph of three coal miners in India became the cover for the Brazilian photo-journalist Sebastião Salgado’s book titled: Workers, An Archeology of the Industrial Age. Trained as an economist, Salgado turned to photography as a way to bring greater attention to adverse conditions around the world. He began documenting the pain caused by exploitation, war and climate destruction, especially on the conditions employing manual labor globally. Using black and white photography as his medium of choice, Salgado’s pictures are lush with texture and layering, even when capturing moments of pain and exhaustion. In “Coal Mining, Dhanbad, Bihar, India”, three coal miners stand one behind the other; each man’s face has a different expression visible through the coal dust. Each man projects dignity and pride along with anger, exhaustion and amusement. Salgado’s close up vantage point creates a direct relationship with his subjects; we can sense that he cares deeply about the situations experienced by the men and women in his photos. Salgado presents suffering and dignity side by side.

Violet House in Front of a Snowy Mountain by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 1938, Private Collection

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Expressionism

Kirchner uses a striking contrast between a vibrant violet house and the stark white of a snowy mountain backdrop. The bold violet color of the structure represents individual creativity and emotional warmth, while the massive snowy mountain symbolizes stability and the endurance of the natural world. The sweeping, expressive lines in the snow and landscape reflect Kirchner’s late-period style developed during his time living in the Swiss Alps near Davos, capturing the energy of nature rather than a strict realistic depiction.

The lever, the pulley, and the screw are nature's old jokes, told slowly enough for a patient man to overhear.

Pablo Picasso, Mother and Child, 1907.
Two figures held together by bold color and quiet intensity. The vivid pink surrounding the work makes the blues, greens, and reds feel even more alive.

⚙️ Emperor Maxentius had ordered that Catherine be tortured to death between four wheels of iron equipped with razor-sharp teeth turning against each other. Luckily Catherine was spared that torment when the wheels were magically destroyed by jet-propelled angels. 👼 Finally, however, Maxentius decrees that she be beheaded - a fate that somehow seemed impossible for her divine supporters to prevent and she was duly martyred.

No patron ordered this. Menzel just painted his own studio wall - plaster masks, a torso, a stray caliper - terracotta red behind chalk-white faces that answer to no one's taste but his. #art #AdolphMenzel #StudioWall #arthistory #meisterdrucke

Adolph Menzel's Studio Wall, 1872: a dense arrangement of plaster casts hangs on a deep terracotta-red studio wall. Along the top, several life and death masks are mounted at angles on wooden shelves - some with closed eyes, one wrapped in cloth. Below, a chalk-white plaster torso fragment dominates the center, flanked by a dark, shadowed cast on the right. In the lower half, more plaster head fragments appear alongside metal calipers and tools hanging from hooks, and a plaster cast of a hand reaches up fro
