I got up early to print the 4th layer (green) on my newest reduction woodcut, Prairie Fire, before opening the studio gallery for the day. This print is really starting to come together. One more layer to print and I think those monarchs are really going to pop!

Photo to woodcut print, online. Edges and tone turn into cut lines, and the density of directional marks shapes light and form. A striking look for posters and covers.

Some #woodcut fun from ‘Dialogus Creaturarum’, an early printed book in Clare College library: “a wolf cajoles an ass into a feat of carpentry whose logical conclusion of bringing the ass to earth, an easy prey, was distressingly marred by the latter's crushing of the plotter in its asinine descent”

Woodcut from the ‘Dialogus Creaturarum’ (Gouda, Holland, 1481.) Reproduced and beautifully described in ‘Clare College 1326-1926. Volume II’ (1930)

I'll be a vendor and panelist at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, Oregon October 2-4th! My table will be in middle of the upstairs lobby with a large selection of original woodcut art as well as reproductions, cards, bookmarks, and other weirdness! #art #woodcut #hplff

A hand-colored woodcut print reproduced on maple wood veneer. The art resembles 16th century woodcut illustration, but depicts Cthulhu, a character created by H.P. Lovecraft. This hybrid humanoid sits cross-legged upon a black rock jutting out of the sea. One crab-like arm points to the stars, and the other down to a city emerging from the waves. It has dark batlike wings spread behind it. Above the figure are the latin words R'lyeh exsurgebit ubi astra parata sunt. .A black ink woodcut print on cream colored paper. A simple black line frames a vertical rectangular scene of a blobby humanoid perched on a mound. It has no eyes and the mouth ends in tentacles. It plays a flute with stubby fingers. A black crescent moon is in the upper right and bog plants including a Sarracenia pitcher plant grow below its clawed feet.A monstrous figure fills a black background. This woodcut print has been hand-colored in a rainbow of hues, from red at the top, to purple below. Depicted is a creature with a sharp tooth filled grimace, tentacle limbs, a long thin tail, and fins like wings containing numerous eyes. A black woodcut reproduced on maple wood veneer. A simple black line encompasses a scene of a monstrous giant dancing inside a ring of black stones. The giant holds a key in one hand and gestures to a doorway in the cloud with the other. It has a scaled chest, tentacled hips with two crude eyes, furry legs, and sauropod feet. Two tiny humans gesture in the corners near bonfires, and birds fill the sky.

Suitable for beginners, this course is very hands-on, practical, and fun. You will be trying out lino & Japanese ply to cut from and explore the benefits of using different types of paper for printing.
