Or else this reasoning posits that you exist, but that you are different and superior to all the rest of Nature, to all other planetmates, which is a kind of egotism, specifically anthropocentrism, that is not consistent with true understanding. Such egoistic, anthropocentric, thinking only finds what it posits in the first place.3

Beyond that, what necessarily follows is that the machine is so wonderful it is able to perform exactly appropriately in applying its mechanical actions to an infinite number of situations and nuances of events. It apparently knows, ahead of time — that is, it is built perfectly into its configuration of molecules of DNA — when that bird is going to come across that twig, of that size, at that position in space (and time), and angle in relation to it, so that it will reach down its beak and grasp that twig and pick it up and move it to the side and over to a stack of other twigs, perfectly arranged previously in the shape of a nest, all performed perfectly, albeit somehow magically. And the bird will fit that twig into where it will most optimally bring about a further addition to that nest.

Therefore, we may speculate that a combination of these factors resulted in a compensatory system wherein the fact of increasing brain size is eventually resolved, to date, by a comparatively reduced gestation period accompanied by increased need for child care after birth; increased need for economic dependency overall (both during and after gestation) by the female; increased need for male parental investment in providing for both female and child; and increased birth pain correlating with increased cultural development to offset or mitigate the effects of birth pain.

The net effect is a species with prolonged child care; increased tendency toward single-family units; increased brain size; greater cultural elaboration; increased birth pain for the neonate; increased “intelligence”; and increased neurotic and psychotic behavior (thus idiosyncratic and variable behavior) which requires further cultural accommodation, hence cultural elaboration — all evolving simultaneously, interrelating and mutually reinforcing each other. All in all, with these considerations, we have the basic factors which outline our distinctive human nature — that is, which constitute, for good or ill, our fundamental distinctions from other species.3

…somehow the pattern of molecules in a part of our bodies, inside ourselves, creates behavior. Things create actions; items in the physi- cal world impel beings to do particular things in particular ways, simply by the fact of their existence. This is like saying that my rock garden ... I’ll even give you, the pattern of my rock garden ... conceivably makes me, want to or not, get up at 7am, make coffee, put particular and specific clothes on, and travel in a particular car, to a particular place, to engage all day in particular and precise actions, at a particular job. Why, how fantastic!

Or, you might say, it is like our DNA are like gears in a magnifi- cent watch which, energy applied, results in all kinds of specific actions. However, this is looking at planetmates as things and objects — which is a byproduct of the objectification of Nature, wrought of our Newtonian-Cartesian dualism — which posits that the world is a machine with no consciousness. Disregarding for a minute the fact that that objectification of Nature is a mistake we make in our devolution from Nature through the process I am describing in this book, at least consider that reasoning has it that you do not exist either. Oh, your body exists, in this formulation, but you are not an experiencing being ... are you now? Hell, even mechanically you are reading these words with no consciousness or awareness in the mix!

…pelves, there was more and more pain to be repressed in order for the organism to not be overwhelmed during the course of its life. And this required continued, ever increasing, growth in neural cells, thus brain size, thus skull size. This increased to the point we are today where in order to fully gestate the brain we ended up with, we would have had to have a twenty-one-month gestation, which we never got. There had to be another way.

Human Nature

How we solved that problem of getting a big head out of a small opening, at this point in our evolution, was to be born earlier than would be ideal. The ever bigger skulls of neonates led to a tendency for newborns to be born more and more prematurely, for with skulls at smaller sizes these prematures would be able to make it out of the womb. Barely. The larger heads still meant greater pain for mothers as well as the newborns themselves than planetmates in Nature needed to endure.

Birth Pain Makes Us Humans

Birth Pain Caused the Feverish Minds of Humans, Which We Call Intelligence

To continue, remember that what is universally acknowledged to distinguish humans from other species is our intelligence and the elaboration of culture that comes from that. However, with the understanding of skull size, birth, and repression described above, we see these much-touted distinctions and claims to superiority to be merely the byproduct of our neocortical attempts to deal with unconscious pain, specifically, that of birth trauma.

“We Are a Fever, We Ain’t Born Typical”

Birth pain caused the feverish minds of humans, which we call our intelligence. “We are a fever. We ain’t born typical,” is the way The Kills have sung it. And those spinning excess wheels of mental fibrilla tion, driven by human birth trauma, are the gears in the machine of our manic material culture.

These factors vied against each other for a long time, with wider pelves and narrower ones competing for ascendance. No doubt, gestations and the amount of birth pain varied as well. Regardless, the skull size had only one direction, up, for it to go. For whatever the compromise of that time in prehistory in terms of the width of…

Culture Versus Instinct

That supposed “blank slate” we are born with — wrought of a pro- cess of forgetting utilized to fend off the overwhelming trauma of the time — has another important ramification. You might say that most species are born and are either immediately or soon enough able to fend for themselves. How they are able to do that is attributed to what we refer to as instinct.

We arrive at this determination of a factor of instinct, not empirically, but conveniently. By that I mean that instinct is not a thing-in- itself that we have discovered in Nature. No. We see that other planetmates are able to do all kinds of things without being taught, and since we do not have that same thing we cannot understand it. Not able to understand it we give it a name — instinct. Problem solved.

But what is it? Well, we say it is genetic. It is behavior laid down in the genes. And we have this further rather magical idea that…

As mentioned, we see in the fossil records some evidence that our pelvic bones became wider for a while, which would have made birth somewhat easier. But what this probably meant, in actuality, is that the baby, needing twenty-one months in the womb, ideally, (we’ll get to that next chapter) was coming out at some point after nine months. It has been said, the bone records show a gestation of twelve months at one point. This would have been assistive to birthing ape- sized heads and with minimal birth trauma. What is more likely is that our skulls were the larger size and some of that extra gestation needed for the bigger brain’s maturation was still happening in the womb, and there was roughly the same amount of pain involved in birth as there is today.

THE FOURTH DESCENT — FETAL MALNUTRITION

Blank Slate and Forgetting

The upshot of all this is that humans, unlike all other species, experi- ence a forgetting, caused by trauma, at our very roots and even before birth. We forget our connection to the Universe, to Nature, and to the Divine. We forget our past lives, even. We are beginning to become that blank slate we will say afterwards that we were at our birth.

However, at the time it is not experienced as a blank slate or nothingness, as we experience ourselves as riddled through with fear and negativity. We feel ourselves to be a victim of our surroundings and begin doing the opposite of what all other species and even our earliest ancestors did during their times in late gestation: We split off from our rootedness in the mother and we cast that unyielding surround of the womb and placenta — and the mother, by proxy — into “the enemy,” needing to be fought. We create a duality between us and Nature, us and other people ... and in terms of how this comes out later in rampant misogyny, between us and women, if we are male.

But it logically follows that there is a limit to which gestation can be allowed to go on without itself becoming an economic disadvantage to the female — certainly the proposed gestation period of two years — twenty-one months to be exact — for full precociousness at the level we see in nonhuman primates would be a substantial economic hardship on the female. Thus it would be selected against, in evolutionary terms.

Furthermore, increasing bipedalism was always at work against the larger pelvis. A narrower pelvis aided ambulation. Better abilities for running and darting about most definitely were survival ad- vantages. In particular, a mother having her arms free so as be able to carry her infant, while dashing away from a danger, would assist in natural selection toward bipedalism. A mother being able to run with an infant, as opposed to having the infant in the womb at that time, would no doubt also have contributed to survival. Thus there were pushes on natural selection in the direction of increasing bipedalism and decreasing durations of pregnancy.

In any case, the demands of survival worked against such a long gestation of even twelve months. Homonin females would have fared poorly by being inhibited this long from foraging and other activities important for survival. They would have died off.

This crowdedness is one of the roots of our development of bombs, in particular, nuclear ones. For it creates in us an unconscious draw toward events of being blown up. We experience a vicarious thrill when we observe the bombing — the shock and awe (notably phrased) — of a battle like was seen at the beginning of the Second Iraqi War. A part of us that we will not acknowledge knows that that thrill is actually our hidden delight of blowing up and exploding out of the womb at that hellacious unending time of crowdedness and suffocation.

Thus the idea of nuclear annihilation at any time — the possibil- ity that one will be, figuratively, “blown up” — has an unacknowl- edged psychic resonance with us. It feels somewhat comforting, even desired, this idea of exploding violently, much the way we might feel about ripping the scab off a wound or scratching an itch that we cannot reach. It has an unconscious draw ... or appeal. We want to “just get it over with.”

And that enchantment with it keeps us from being appropriately disturbed by such an unbelievable catastrophe and allows us to live with it; though if we were sane, it would not. Indeed, there is an element of counterphobia in our reaction to nuclear annihilation, with roots in that time of crowdedness and suffocation at fetal malnutrition, a kind of machismo, if you will, that pushes us to feel and act like, “Come on! Bring it on! Do your worst!”
