🎉For the longest time, Slapton near Kingsbridge in South Devon was listed as "Hapton" (due to a mis-indexing of Sl being read as H) at TNA but apparently now it is fixed!

Oh YES I am willing to do link review (and have just sent the project an email to that effect).

This is the kind of project I like to see, comparing complete datasets to each other. I am in!

How you can help
We welcome contributions to verification in two main ways:

Link review: Help validate samples of links suggested by our models using a simple web-based review interface, and help us break ties when our models aren’t confident enough.
Sharing genealogical data: It is very helpful for us to compare our model’s results to genealogies that you may have already built. If you decide to share data with us we will commit to keep it entirely confidential and use it solely for research purposes.

David Barnard has registered two #OnePlaceStudies with us, both of places in Wales: Llwydcoed One-Place Study in Glamorgan and Castle View, Pensarn One-Place Study in Denbighshire. #OnePlaceWednesday

Llwydcoed One-Place Study.
Image: An extract from an old, large scale Ordnance Survey map showing the dispersed settlement of Llwydcoed, with buildings, roads, railway lines, field boundaries, wooded areas, and old mining pits. The largest settlement, to the North, is Tre-Gibbon, with its own school and chapel. In the South-east corner of the map extract is Moriah Place, with a chapel and a pub named the Miners' Arms. The only church, dedicated to St James, stands alone at a road junction. Elsewhere, there is Llwydcoed Farm on the West side of the map extract, Llwydcoed Station on the railway, between the church and Tre-Gibbon, Llwydcoed House on the Southern edge of the map.

We’ve more newly-registered #OnePlaceStudies for you today! David Huddart’s Culgaith One-Place Study, Cumbria, is based on, and continues on from, the 1959 book “The Story of Culgaith and its People” by Ada F Huddart – David’s grandmother. Visit David’s Culgaith People wesbite on #OnePlaceWedneday!

Culgaith One-Place Study.
Image: An old black and white photo of a street in Culgaith. The road itself runs from the bottom left coner of the picture, curves to the right in the middle distance (where there is a man with a horse and trap), then runs back round to the left. On the right side of the road there is a footpath, on which stands a woman wearing a long white skirt, a long-sleeved upper garment, and a wide-brimmed hat. There are houses and other buildings on both sides of the street, the houses are all of two storeys, probably all stone-built; some are lime-washed. A large tree stands in what may be a front garden, enclosed by a low stone wall which projects out to the edge of the road.

Lost village alert!

Retew in #Cornwall was demolished for an expansion to the nearby china clay works. Former resident, Mike Ford, has written 'The History of Retew and its People' to keep memories of the village alive.

If you have access to a site for historical newspapers and the site offers you the chance to set up an alert, do it! Make an alert for your study place and see what turns up. #OnePlaceBirdwatching

Other hits from this week's alert come from papers in Somerset and one from Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. (That story was already known to me because it made the news all over the country.) And it's a banger.

What's interesting about this Family Notice?
- both parties are from Devon (Slapton and Kingsbridge) but the marriage took place in Exeter
- the paper was published in Cheshire

It was brought to my attention by an alert I set up for my #OnePlaceStudy.

The WW1 Draft Registration cards are an excellent resource for studying migration patterns and for doing place studies.

Tip: draft cards may contain information about *prior* military service, but they do not indicate whether someone was called.
