🍁even silence would
lose its distance

I come looking for you
because something in me
becomes clearer
when you are near

Autumn has arrived
Mist hangs outside my window,
and the smell of moss and
wet earth fills..

Nearly three weeks since launch, and the poem people mention least is the one I'd defend hardest:

Simonsbath, a place that isn't tragic or triumphant, just quietly, stubbornly itself. Which of the 76 would you defend that nobody else mentions?

A wide-angle view of the Exmoor high moors at dawn. The River Barle cuts through dark, saturated peat banks. Ancient grey stones are encrusted with thick, vibrant green lichen and damp moss. A heavy, low-hanging mist clings to the valley floor, blurring the line between the iron-grey sky and the undulating brown hills. The lighting is somber and diffused, highlighting the rugged, unyielding texture of the moorland grass and the cold, glassy surface of the water. Focus on the raw, tactile quality of the earth and the stillness of the morning air.

This week's whole craft lesson in one line: you don't need a reason to prefer something. Liking it is the reason.

Somerset In Verse – Exmoor To Levels In Poetry runs on that principle more than any single geological fact in it.

🏖️ your voice found its way home
a line written in sand

My breath goes out
with the wind,
a line written in sand
that the sea
keeps coming back for.

Sometimes I think
of a star being born
when your voice reaches me…

In 1818, John Knight bought most of Exmoor and tried to farm it — a twenty-nine-mile wall, drained moorland, a failed copper mine. Two centuries on, the moor is winning.

Somerset In Verse – Exmoor To Levels In Poetry treats that as fact, not fable.

#SomersetInVerse #NaturePoetry

A vast, sweeping Exmoor landscape under a heavy, bruised September sky. In the foreground, a derelict dry-stone wall, moss-covered and partially collapsed, snakes across the undulating moorland. Rushes and yellowing grass push through the gaps in the slate. In the distance, the skeletal remains of a Victorian industrial engine house are being swallowed by thick Atlantic mist. The palette is dominated by deep ochre, slate grey, and bruised purple heathers. Sharp focus on the texture of lichen-encrusted stone and the damp, dark soil of a drainage ditch. Atmospheric, somber, and ancient.

'Each November, a hundred gunpowder charges / fire at once from the ends of wooden coshes.' That's Bridgwater.

Somerset In Verse – Exmoor To Levels In Poetry, out now in paperback.

#NaturePoetry #DeepTime

Wide-angle cinematic shot of the Somerset Levels at twilight. Low-hanging, heavy mist rolls over dark, saturated peat soil and still water channels. In the far distance, a sharp, incandescent burst of amber and gold light erupts against a bruised indigo sky, reflecting in the damp earth. The foreground features the intricate, sharp textures of frozen reeds and weathered wooden fence posts. The atmosphere is a heavy silence interrupted by a singular, violent flash of warmth, capturing the tension between the ancient, cold landscape and a fleeting moment of fire. High contrast, rich earthy tones, and sharp crystalline details.

Wordsworth tried and failed to finish a poem about Dead Woman's Ditch — 'A Somersetshire Tragedy,' abandoned, unpublished.

Somerset In Verse – Exmoor To Levels In Poetry has 76 finished poems. Make of that what you will.

#Somerset #NaturePoetry

A wide-angle landscape of the Quantock Hills under a heavy, overcast sky. In the foreground, an ancient earthwork ditch cuts through the terrain, lined with damp, dark peat and tangled, skeletal hawthorn branches. The mid-ground is a sea of rusted bracken and deep green moss. Thick, swirling mist clings to the valley floor, partially obscuring the distant, rolling ridges of the Somerset Levels. The atmosphere is weighted and somber, with sharp, tactile textures of cold stone and wet earth. The lighting is low and moody, capturing the tension between the enduring hills and the shifting fog.

Goodnight lune

I saw a hare out there
this starry night
meadow bright

and the world rang true
silver bell-blue
just for a while

The trees sang low
to the silky-eared doe
as I watched her go

framed in star-glow
and wave-whisper foam
like snow.

A magnetometer survey at Stanton Drew found over four hundred buried postholes — the largest timber monument found in Britain, invisible from the surface. Somerset In Verse – Exmoor To Levels In Poetry treats the find as the real subject.

#DeepTime #NaturePoetry

A wide-angle landscape of a Somerset field at first light, where the morning mist clings to the hollows of the earth. Beneath the surface of the vibrant green turf, translucent, glowing outlines of concentric timber circles are visible, as if revealed by a spectral X-ray. The soil is rich and dark, layered with ancient sediment and limestone fragments. The horizon is sharp, defined by the rugged silhouette of distant tors under a pale, cold sky. The atmosphere is thick with the weight of unrecorded centuries and the damp scent of peat and stone.

❣️the aquamarine pearl
you left in me
a kiss made of gaze

Our first kiss
was with the eyes.
Jasmine opened
its quiet perfume
into the air,

and I followed your gaze
as though it knew
where to lead me.

A drop of rain
fell from the sky,
caught the light…

'There is no slow decay here. / Gardens shorten. Fences hang over the void.' That's Watchet, where the coast is retreating in real time. Somerset In Verse – Exmoor To Levels In Poetry, out now in paperback.

#Somerset #NaturePoetry

A wide-angle landscape of the Watchet coastline where the cliff edge has recently buckled. Jagged layers of blue lias mudstone and grey limestone are exposed in the raw, crumbling precipice. A solitary, weathered wooden fence rail hangs suspended in mid-air over the void, its base lost to the sea. Below, the churning, silt-heavy waters of the Bristol Channel meet a shoreline of dark, wet shingle. The atmosphere is thick with salt-mist under a heavy September sky, highlighting the sharp textures of fractured rock and the damp, dark red earth of the receding garden above. High contrast, cinematic lighting, focused on the visceral boundary between land and water.

A desultory grey day,
Heron scolded and dripping.

I float my anxieties on still waters
But find it difficult to let them go.

Sometimes, there are
No burning bushes.
Only the squabble of ducks
And the miracle of sloe.

The canal invites
Me in to its silence.

Feel the damp air. Can you smell the scent of damp earth and atill water? The air is clammy and holds you like a rejected lover. Reach up. Feel the rain wet branch of blackthorn. Those little orbs, are like small universes, night dark. Their fruit sweet and sharp. Roll one on your tongue. This is the taste of life.
