Trauma is rarely ever viewed and treated for the disability that it is, even by folks who are committed to Disability Justice. One outcome of this is that the ableism that we endure for being traumatized is rarely ever recognized as real ableism. The same attitudes that are often condemned when directed towards other disabled folks (such as pressuring them into being "cured" or shaming them for their access needs), are accepted as normal when directed towards trauma.

Candice Alaska Ableism, in any form, is not a "lesser" form of oppression and discrimination. Ableism is dangerous and can be lethal. Ableism towards trauma can lead to isolation, further disablement, and it facilitates eugenics. People are forced to mask their trauma to avoid being ostracized from their communities and to maintain their relationships, and anyone who cannot mask (aka perform neuroconformity or appear non-disabled) is usually shamed and isolated, often becoming even more disabled and impoverished.

Candice Alaska Considering that many severely traumatized people (the people who may be least able to mask) are also often impoverished, this isolation can be a life sentence. This isolation can also render abuse victims/survivors extremely vulnerable to revictimization. If we care about survivors, we cannot ostracise them for being traumatized, or make their inclusion in our communities contingent upon "healing" or their "overcoming" their disability. We have to learn to make space for trauma now.

Candice Alaska We cannot demand that people appear non-disabled/non-traumatized in order to be part of our communities. A Disability Justice framework recognizes that disabled people have inherent worth just as we are, and that we belong in and deserve community. Where ableism stigmatizes and ostracises survivors and our needs, a Disability Justice framework helps to keep survivors in community, and recognizes us as inherently whole, whether or not we can ever achieve "healing." Survivor liberation requires Disability Justice.
