Someone responded to my caterpillar on Mastodon saying they didn't know pitcher plants produced a paralytic agent, possibly narcotic (coiine, found in hemlock) so I dug this old video out :). He was standing up and waving his arms around before I grabbed the camera, acting tipsy.

@norska11.bsky.social Look what I did. I'll update with names once I have this mess of labels sorted out. 😂👍🌱

Bog report. The seedlings were all a little damaged by the moss, but the weakest seedling, a round leaf sundew, is still managing to open and the largest flytrap now has enough energy to raise its leaves from the moss, and a tiny trap is opening for tiny bugz.

#carnivorousPlants #gardening

A casserole dish full of red/purple sphagnum moss, with 10 little mesh pots, each containing a carnivorous plant seedling found in the moss when it arrived.A round leaf sundew, damaged leaves have been laying prone on the moss but not withering, working well enough to stay green and photosynthesize. The leaf at the upper left is opening. Two miniscule flytraps, the smaller one barely visible at the lowest center of the image. Above it, a bent and damaged flytrap leaf is managing to hang in there, the trap raising higher from the moss than it was, and starting to open.A germinating seedling. It's not likely to be a carnivorous plant, I've only grown from cuttings so can't be sure, but I don't think the seed leaves of flytraps, pitcher plants, or sundews look like that. It is, however, something from the bog so might be cool. A few of these came up, along with some grasses but I'm not interested in grasses so those get plucked. Then I remembered grass pink orchid grows in the area, so I might stop doing that.

Nepenthes northiana x veitchii “Candy Dreams” is still a small plant but has color hitting like a big one. Nothing but pink when it opens, aging to high contrast reds, oranges, and green-yellows (seen in the trap behind this one).

That one with color had something interesting in the growth. A stolon? I've only seen #Sarracenia plants grow from a crown. Turns out someone else noticed one on Sarracenia purpurea var. montana, which the source has. Bet it ends up that.

Another cool carnivorous plant is the purple pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea in the Sarraceniaceae family), a North American native. Insects drown in the water in the cup & are digested. Native Americans used the root to treat smallpox. #carnivorousplants #photography #gardening #plantmedicine

The bog arrived! The lovely Carmen helped me reach my fundraising goal because a carnivorous plant artist needs carnivorous plants. The moss will be rinsed for the seeds, so I can germinate and identify the lot. Scored two flytraps, one tiny and one wee. More later.
#carnivorousPlants #gardening

A mixture of red and purple sphagnum scattered with green. Some fine leaved, some thick. It will be sorted and aligned with the growns facing up, and gently wrapped around the seedlings, then placed in separate containers I manage to find in a minute.A blue plate with a white square of paper towel on it. On the blue part of the plate is Drosera capensis, the cape sundew. Doesn't need dormancy, so I wanted to guarantee I had it for my cheese making experiments. Mostly it's a variety of pitcher plant seedlings, I see a hint of color on one and a few hints of different growth patterns. They could be hybrids, I won't know until I see the results of their seeds. I won't know that until after they bloom, takes a couple of years, lol. Also, a couple of round leaf sundews. One tiny flytrap. One wee flytrap, by a wee stick.

This plant is never going to get old to look at. Every new Nepenthes villosa x hamata trap goes from purely yellow peristome to this bicolor beauty…to the deep maroon in the last pic. And the teeth just keep getting more pronounced.

My sarracenia had a rough start this spring due to a cold spell following on the heels of a warm spell but they rallied. The one on the left put out the biggest pitcher yet (this is their third year here).
