#AncestryHour There's also a problem at Ancestry (and probably everywhere) of records that have strayed from their expected homes, so they're tucked away in databases where you don't expect to find them. Unless you browse, they aren't necessarily discoverable.

#AncestryHour If FamilySearch can't be bothered to listen to local people and trust their local knowledge when they're indexing a big project, what hope can we have that Ancestry (especially now that they've been captured by moneyed interests) will do it?

@packrat74.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 6:51 PM

#AncestryHour Yes, but ...

One of the things I remember from starting out in #genealogy is hearing people cursing about how FamilySearch ignored the expertise of local indexers and assigned bad places to census records in arbitration.

I’ve been writing up the history of my house for my village magazine and I’ve been in touch with relatives of two C20th families through Ancestry. I now have photographs, and one of the contacts is putting me in touch with his mum, who lived here as a child in the 1950s!

A sepia photograph of Noēl Cullen, c. 1920. She lived in my house in the 1940s. She is standing on what might be a garden, wearing a simple pale dress and holding a cat. Photograph © her relation, Nancy Cullen.

Sounds like it was a poorly run project. I don’t have any Suffolk ancestors, but a large part of my niece’s paternal side is. I’m sure she’ll be just as frustrated. #AncestryHour #FamilyHistory

#AncestryHour I really feel for anyone who has a lot of material to back up right now, with hard drive prices going into the stratosphere.

#AncestryHour Don't get me started on lousy indexing or we could be here all day. I'm still steamed about the 1911 Census of England and Wales for my #OnePlaceStudy place being mis-indexed *by TNA* so none of the online "repositories" like Ancestry or findmypast are willing to fix it.

Me: Looks at Trending:

"Tapas webcomic platform shuts down"

Also me: I need to pull copies of all my questions and answers from #Genealogy Stack Exchange so I can have my own copy. (They all need updating anyway, so ....)

I have waited SO long for the Suffolk parish registers & BTs. It’s so disappointing that Ancestry have made such a pig’s ear of it #AncestryHour

#AncestryHour I've also done a smidgen of work on some 20th Century place studies. Not as much as I wanted because of real life stuff (painting) getting in the way.

So that's how my #genealogy week has been. How has your research been going?

@packrat74.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 6:17 PM

#AncestryHour My brother was in the Air National Guard so I remember some of the uniform changes but was I taking notes at the time? Of course not!

Silly me - when I was a kid, I thought #genealogy was for race horses and pedigreed dogs and cats. I had no idea people did genealogy for people. 🤦

#AncestryHour If I had known I would be doing #FamilyHistory research, I would have begged my father-in-law for a list of all the places he had been stationed. If you've done any #MilitaryHistory you can guess that there were reorganizations done during his time in service.

Greetings #AncestryHour! This weekend I went back to the beginning and reviewed historical newspapers already collectred and made new searches for my husband's parents. My father-in-law served in the US Air Force so the family timeline is geographically diverse.

#AncestryHour @davelifelines.bsky.social It looks like Ancestry is at it again. 👇 Absolutely shameful to index records by the names of places that don't exist.

@emilyrandallpaz.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 5:45 PM

#AncestryHour Has anyone else had the displeasure of working with this newly added record set on Ancestry? Suffolk, England, Bishops' Transcripts, 1560-1853. It is by far the worst indexing job I've seen from Ancestry and raises concerns for future digitization projects #genealogy #FamilyHistory

#GenHour #genealogy #FamilyHistory #AncestryHour Oh wait there's more free downloads! Search tips on looking for your ancestor's occupation, and a glossary of occupations.
