The night before, Jacqueline had started moving Mary’s bedroom to the first floor. Rebecca had refused to help, and Jacqueline had no one else to ask. When she tried to move her mother’s bed frame, her hand caught and twisted, sending white-hot pain through her arm. She’d hissed an expletive, and the taste of soap in her mouth from the last time she’d sworn in her mother’s house came rushing back as a memory she’d sooner forget.
