One of the merchantmen was also wrecked. The grounding was blamed on the incompetence of the pilot, who had led the ships onto the sands despite the weather being clear and the seamarks all correct and visible. He was fined 12 months pay and imprisoned for a year. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

Two torpedoes struck Courageous close together on her port side as she turned into the wind to launch aircraft. She lost power and began to list, flooding very rapidly and sinking 20 minutes later. The Board of Enquiry blamed the loss on poor training and failings in damage control. #WW2 #RoyalNavy

The accident was only discovered when the X.9 failed to surface for a scheduled ventilation and battery charging period. The tow was then pulled in and was found to have broken. HMS Syrtis reversed course and searched for some hours, but found only an oil slick. #RoyalNavy #WW2 #NavalHistory
