Melvil tried to organize the world into categories, but the hidden cost was reducing people and things into numbers. John pushed back against that kind of thinking, but McLuhan argues that he was still shaped by fragmentation. Both show how systems can shape the way we think. #hwa2 #thetwodeweys

I definitely tried to investigate the reading, but eventually, I did just let this one go #justkeptgoing #hwa2.

This example definitely resonates with me. TikTok is probably where this happens to me the most. I’ll open the app planning to scroll for only a few minutes, and then I end up staying on it way longer because there’s always another video keeping my attention. #hwa2 #mediafunhouse

Amateurs offer a perspective experts miss because they haven’t learned to ignore the odd facts yet. They keep experimenting, question things experts accept as normal, and can afford to be wrong. I’d rather be an amateur because that mindset is more creative and open to ideas. #hwa2 #amateurvsexpert

A media environment is something we have stopped noticing its influence. An anti-environment disrupts that experience and makes us pay attention to what was previously invisible, causing us to ask why things work the way they do or why certain behaviors feel normal #hwa2 #antienvironmental

This helps me understand the 2 terms way better #hwa2

Football has become such a normal part of my life that I didn’t realize how much I enjoyed it until the Super Bowl ended last year. The offseason is an anti-environment because taking football away from my routine made me realize how much excitement it adds to my week. #hwa2 #normalmedium

Thinking outside the box helps us notice the different environment rather than just accept it as normal. From afar, it may all look like water, but freshwater and saltwater create very different conditions for the creatures that live in them. #hwa2 #thewater

We use the past to make sense of what’s happening now, even as we’re moving forward into something new. #hwa2 #forrealthough

What stood out to me is the idea that once something becomes normal, we stop really seeing it. That makes me wonder what other things shape how I act every day without me even noticing them anymore. #hwa2 #invisible

I like that we don't have exams in this class because I feel like Bluesky is way more engaging than a Scantron. #hwa2

#hwa2 #mediafunhouse This example definitely resonates with me. Currently, this happens to me the most on Instagram. Even if it's not checking a dm, I will just open the app for "five minutes" and then get in a scrolling loop for substantially longer than that. The overstimulation keeps me there.

#hwa2 I think the comparison of the two Deweys highlights just how deeply our environments can influence us. Even though John Dewey was advocating for not comparing humans to decimals, his environment had still encoded things like fragmentation into him enough for it to be apart of him.

#hwa2 #amateurvsexpert Amateurs can afford to lose an argument, so they feel empowered to keep working and challenge their environments and perceptions. They also are able to massage the massage back to challenge it. I would rather be an amateur so I'm not blindly following how things "should go."

#hwa2 #antienvironment While the environment shapes us and is invisible to us, the anti-environment challenges it by disrupting it. Some questions include why am I doing things this way or when did this start to feel normal? One anti-environment experiment would be to turn your phone to grey scale.

#hwa2 I find the characterization of professionalism as "accept[ing] uncritically the ground rules of the environment" interesting. It seems like someone could be aware of the mediums at play and still need to accept them for one reason or another. I wonder if there can be a person in the middle.

#hwa2 #normalmedium One of the mediums that definitely shapes my life are Spotify daily mix/for you playlists. I'm not sure what my design would be. I could try playing music that I never listen to on repeat while I'm asleep so the algorithm would be completely different in the morning.

@gabi-senior-year.bsky.socialSep 19, 2026, 5:23 PM

#hwa2 #thewater I think you meant that we need to explore the environments and media that are shaping us. The content is not as important to our studies as the design awareness is, as the designs are what shapes how we are, even when they may be invisible to us at first glance.
