I think the “water you’re swimming in” is like when you wear the same perfume everyday and after a while you dont even smell it anymore. The medium can affect us so much that we stop noticing its even doing anything to us. #hwa2 #thewater

@serendipityponders.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 3:09 AM

McLuhan didn't want us to decode content-- that's something anyone can do.. well.. mostly. But the water we're swimming in ig indicates like what exactly we have to be aware of while being delivered the message.. like say tiktok or youtube; can we trust these sites? that's the medium #hwa2 #thewater

@rw20mmc.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 2:20 AM

2. I'm pretty sure you meant that McLuhan wants us to notice that the "water we're swimming in" is the massive influence that the media has on us as compared to just "decoding" or discovering something that the media gives to us. That way we understand the media is more than info. #hwa2 #thewater

@jaredjunioryear.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 1:52 AM

You meant to truly open your eyes and realize the medium you are on. Do not take things as they are but truly realize the context and how it is being presented and potentially trying to change your views. #hwa2 #thewater

@shurelysha1lly.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 1:46 AM

you basically meant to be aware of how you're consuming media and where it's coming from rather than the content itself. basically check your sources - context over everything. #hwa2 #thewater

@kimbo10.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 12:18 AM

I think the “water you’re swimming in” thing is basically noticing the medium instead of just the content. Like I’m usually focused on what I’m watching on TikTok and not really thinking about how TikTok itself affects how I’m getting that info. #hwa2 #thewater

@danielletou.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 12:14 AM

Q2: The way I took this is that McLuhan doesn't want you to decode but to recognize what is around you and analyze it. #hwa2 #thewater

@yush025.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 12:13 AM

Notice the water you're swimming in means to open your eyes to the otherwise overlooked medium. Instead of taking information at face value, think about how its presentation affects the way you receive it. It's awareness of the invisible. Look at the book not the words on the page. #hwa2 #thewater

@pinnedbytaida.bsky.socialSep 20, 2026, 11:53 PM

You meant that McLuhan wants us to become more aware about the media we are surrounded by and how we as a society drown it out because it becomes less noticeable #hwa2 #thewater

@kaylak4t.bsky.socialSep 20, 2026, 10:04 PM

I think, "McLuhan doesn't want you to decode content. he wants you to notice the water you're swimming in" is similar to the idea that media being invisible from earlier. Instead of focusing just on the content, think about how the medium is shaping you and your experience. #hwa2 #thewater

@amanraj07.bsky.socialSep 20, 2026, 9:36 PM

"McLuhan doesn't want you to decode content, he wants you to notice the water you are swimming in" , he is trying to make us understand the effect media has on us while we are engrossed into it , scrolling trains you to have shorter attention span, no matter what videos you watch.

You meant that the focus of our work is not to analyze the content presented itself. While this is important, we need to take a look and understand how we are being shaped by the media we are "in." You mentioned that we are being shaped by "fonts, layouts, fragments..." #hwa2 #thewater

@arain24.bsky.socialSep 20, 2026, 7:03 PM

#hwa2 #thewater he's not asking what fish are in the water, he's asking you to notice the environment around you, what makes up this water you're swimming in, the terrain, the coral, etc, and how it makes you feel

@vividk.bsky.socialSep 20, 2026, 6:59 PM

#hwa2 #thewater you mean that being aware of the environment in which you are being told something is, in fact, part of the message that is being told. for example, mcluhan's message in "the medium is the massage" would have a much different tone and appeal if it became a movie or a tiktok reel

@silvanatalia444.bsky.socialSep 20, 2026, 6:59 PM

to notice the water you're swimming in means to understand the influence that the media is having on you. don't judge the content, judge your reaction to the content and how you are letting it control you. #hwa2 #thewater

@butterflies49.bsky.socialSep 20, 2026, 5:55 PM

He wants you to open your eyes and see what is around you what exactly they're putting in your view. Be careful with what you're looking at because you don't want to drown. #hwa2 #thewater

@kneeuhh.bsky.socialSep 20, 2026, 3:08 PM

By that you meant to notice the literal surroundings that we put ourselves in. Because when you go swimming you notice plants or fish in the water, which represents the content. But McLuhan wants us to notice the water itself, which is the medium the content is provided through. #hwa2 #thewater

@tommyf07.bsky.socialSep 20, 2026, 3:45 AM

By saying notice it’s just what you said AWARENESS, the swimming pool also represents the “container”, where we get the info from. #hwa2 #thewater

@tommyf07.bsky.socialSep 20, 2026, 3:41 AM

What you mean by notice the water you’re swimming in is to notice the invisible. Notice how we are shaped by media, not interpret it. It’s like in the beginning as I also posted, what media is isn’t important, what it does is more crucial. Simply realizing will let us flee the chaos #hwa2 #thewater

@askully.bsky.socialSep 19, 2026, 7:33 PM

Thinking outside the box helps us notice the different environment rather than just accept it as normal. From afar, it may all look like water, but freshwater and saltwater create very different conditions for the creatures that live in them. #hwa2 #thewater
