He threw the gold sovereigns into the snow and kept the twelve-pound banjo. He crossed 800 miles of ocean in a 22-foot boat, then climbed uncharted mountains with screws in his boots. The station manager asked who he was. His name was Shackleton.

Happy birthday Canadian scientist/writer Ursula Franklin (1921 – 2016), thinker on role of tech in society, advocate for women in STEM, peace & social justice. 🧪🐡👩🏼‍🔬🎢 #histsci Her research interests were guided by her principles, including gathering evidence of the harmful health effects of radiation

Linocut of Ursula Franklin working in the lab in blue in a circle in the centre. Surrounding this area is a golden olive colour, on which are carved several gears at the top, a tooth at the bottom left which is labelled Sr-90 with radiating arrows labelled e- to indicate how radioactive strontium-90 can absorbed into bone can undergo radioactive decay emitting electrons, and in the bottom right corner is an ancient Chinese vessel she dated. The blue circle is actually a peace symbol and below it is a cross carved into the golden olive area, making it the symbol for women.

Today is the feast day of Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179), here surrounded by plants & a mineral she touted as medical treatments, her invented alphabet & model of the universe. One of my most popular prints! 🐡👩🏼‍🔬🧪 #histsci

Her writings preserve not only her own knowledge & theories but the nature

This is my hand-printed 11" x 14" lino block print of Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179), surrounded by plants and a mineral she touted as medical treatments, her invented alphabet and model of the universe, on lovely ivory Japanese washi paper. She is printed in dark blue on cream coloured washi paper. She is dressed in a habit holding a scroll with one of her Gregorian chants in Medieval musical notation. Her model of the universe is depicted on her habit. Clockwise from the top, she is surrounded: by tansy; common comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is sometimes used on the skin to treat wounds and reduce inflammation from sprains and broken bones, it roots and leaves contain allantoin, a substance that helps new skin cells grow, along with other substances that reduce inflammation and keep skin healthy; mandrake (species in the genus Mandragora, either Mandragora officinarum or Mandragora autumnalis) which contain deliriant hallucinogenic tropane alkaloids which are poisonous; sulfur for skin ailments does indeed act as a fungicide; lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) which has been shown to have some calming effects, some antibacterial properties and positive effects on indigestion; and quince (Cydonia oblonga), which while understudied, there is some early evidence that it may help prevent stomach ulcers. Above and below Hildegard is the alphabet along with her own alternate alphabet Litterae ignotae which she used for her own Lingua ignota (Unknown Language).

Day 17 of #SciArtSeptember shape prompt is eyelet, so I thought of lace collars & chose to share astrophysicist Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979), who discovered that hydrogen and helium are the most common elements in the universe.🧪🐡👩🏼‍🔬🔭 #histsci

Born England, she won a scholarship

My linocut portrait of astronomer Cecelia Payne-Gaposchkin: At the bottom there’s a thin horizontal rectangle with a rainbow roll from left to right of indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red and black. The rectangle has a series of discrete thin vertical black stripes as this is a solar absorption spectrum. Above is Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin’s face and neck and a halo made by the shape of the sun in yellow and orange against a black background of outer space. She is serious young woman with a bob and a wide lace collar. Shading on her face is in the yellow of the sun.

In 1843, a man inhaled a gold coin during a magic trick for his children. England's finest surgeon failed. So his father, the inventor of the tunnelling shield, built a machine to shake it loose. The patient: Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

My linocut portrait of Rosalind Franklin (1920 – 1958), in a gradient of magenta from her shoulders up through dark blue to her hair. Her necklace is a double helix of DNA. Her brooch is the Tobacco Mosaic Virus. I’m looking for good quotes about the reality of scientific discovery from everyday scientists. Preferably something they said in a talk (but in a paper is ok too). Or you can riff live. Hit me with your best ones! #science #discovery #philsci #histsci #physics

Any history buffs out there know when and where was the first use of the word “discovery” re: a scientific finding? Been looking at old dictionaries and learned it used to be used to mean uncover info as a spy. Now I picture scientists as peeping Toms. Awkward. #histsci #lexicographer

History of science friends: Would you describe Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605) as a *medieval* natural historian?

Because that's what my former institution's recent social media post seems to be saying...
