'It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story.'

#BookWormSat

This quote from a LIFE Magazine interview in May of 1956 is commonly misattributed to Agatha Christie, but she did not quip this herself – in fact, she thinks quite the opposite:

LIFE Magazine 14 May 1956
Christie fans so admire the settings of what has become known as the "classic" whodunit that they insist no other sort is any good. One of them has said, for example, "It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story." Agatha Christie herself does not share these views. She enjoys whodunits which are quite different from her own. She is a great partisan of Margery Allingham, Ellery Queen ("Very maddening, but quite nice") and Frances and Richard Lockridge's Mr. and Mrs. North. Among newcomers she rates Michael Gilbert, author of Smallbones Deceased, the best. She is also enthusiastic about science-fiction because of the wonderful new scope it offers in the realm of mysterious invention.

"The mill stood in a narrow side-street in the heart of a district characterised by squalor & the numerous streets of a similar sort, as well as by the number of houses crammed in those streets & the multitude of human beings herded in those drab dwellings." ~ Odd Man Out, F.L.Green.

Looking up at the endless tiers of balconies, he felt uneasily like a visitor to a malevolent zoo where terraces of vertically mounted cages contained creatures of random and ferocious cruelty.

"For myself, I always write about Dublin, because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to the heart of all the cities of the world. In the particular is contained the universal"

'Desire is a city of yellow houses
As it surrenders its drunks to the night.
It is the drunks on ancient bicycles
Warbling into motionless air,
And the pigeons, asleep in branches,
That will repeat the same songs tomorrow
Believing them new.'

"Time passes. Listen. Time passes.
Come closer now.
Only you can hear the houses sleeping in the streets in the slow deep salt and silent black, bandaged night."

In London
every now and then
I get this craving
for my mother's food
I leave art galleries
in search of plantains
saltfish/sweet potatoes

I need this link

I need this touch
of home
swinging my bag
like a beacon
against the cold.

🖼️ Tschabalala Self

Lady In Blue by New York artist Tschabalala Self, which pays homage to a young, metropolitan woman, is the 16th artwork to feature on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square since 1998. And it’s gorgeous!

Unreal City,
Under the brown fog of a winter dawn,
A crowd flowed over London Bridge, so many,
I had not thought death had undone so many.
Sighs, short and infrequent, were exhaled,
And each man fixed his eyes before his feet.

🖼️ Monet

Monet The Thames below Westminster

Between 1870-1871 Monet stayed in London. During his stay he produced this foggy scene which includes some of London’s most famous landmarks such as Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament. Monet has exaggerated the height of the towers of the Houses of Parliament and set the buildings against a warm pink sky creating an almost fairy tale like depiction of the capital.

To call, in the harsh morning, sleep-stupid faces through the daily gate.’ ~ Louis MacNeice
