Matriarchy in a Cage What is even more provocative and telling is that these perinatal hordes are pulling along behind themselves, using ropes, an enslaved damsel. Specifically, it is an angelic version of a female figure who will later show up again in real life and become the hero’s girlfriend, Jill Layton (played by Kim Greist). You cannot have a clearer depiction of an anima figure as this damsel in a cage. The anima, according to Jungian psychology, is a male’s repressed feminine side, who “haunts” him throughout life, unless those feminine qualities are embraced within him and integrated into the personality. We saw an excellent depiction of it in the Patricia character in Joe Versus the Volcano; most revealing was the way Patricia, played by Meg Ryan, showed up earlier in the movie as two other women, with whom Joe was romantically involved. The three characters had distinctively different personalities but were all played by Meg Ryan, such that we understand why Joe, in the scene at the volcano, would tell Patricia, “The first time I saw you. I felt like I'd seen you before.” Thus, a man’s anima, repressed as it is, is projected onto the world, and men see its elements in other women. Why, how fantastic! Or, you might say, it is like our DNA are like gears in a magnifi- cent watch which, energy applied, results in all kinds of specific actions. However, this is looking at planetmates as things and objects — which is a byproduct of the objectification of Nature, wrought of our Newtonian-Cartesian dualism — which posits that the world is a machine with no consciousness. Disregarding for a minute the fact that that objectification of Nature is a mistake we make in our devolution from Nature through the process I am describing in this book, at least consider that reasoning has it that you do not exist either. Oh, your body exists, in this formulation, but you are not an experiencing being ... are you now? Hell, even mechanically you are reading these words with no consciousness or awareness in the mix!

Risking It All in Running Away The novel, Jitterbug Perfume, by Tom Robbins, contains an excellent exploration and understanding of this new approach — the necessity, first and foremost, that one not be part of the evil, in a situation where wrongness blankets everything. The story depicts the hero, Alobar, refusing to go along with the cultural mandates of his society, seen clearly as ridiculous and harmful, especially to him. This is wrongness, all pervasive, for the cultural mindset contains not a shred of an alternative. He, indeed, is a king who, according to tradition, is supposed to kill himself at a certain time. No king has ever before refused this regicide. No one in that culture has ever really considered one could. This situation is not unlike many cultures today and is certainly the mindset of those living in the societies of earlier times. Anthropologists readily observe that the lesser the contact any society and culture has with other ones, the lesser those people living within it know of alternatives to the tenets of their own culture. And the lesser people know of alternatives to anything, including the cultural views of one’s society, the less they are able to conceive options in the decisions of one’s life. What I discovered was that living the joy grids led to earlier primal experiences at the cellular level — specifically, sperm, egg, zygote, and blastocyst — which had characteristically spiritual components and that this coincided with life experience which brought those spiritual perspectives into practice and use and expanded and deepened them.

In such situations, the battlefield inside oneself must be walked away from. It does little good if one makes good therapeutic progress in self-esteem when the fate of all life is in the balance. What does it matter if one is fearful or anxious ... why put effort into changing it ... when we are in a situation and in a society where that is warranted ... and even saner than being unmoved and complacent about it? Similarly, while confronting the evils of the world one must make an inner surrender of the competition on that worldly level in hopes of raising the entire conflict to another dimension on the inner plane. For who do these activities harm? They are physically the equivalent of massaging. But since they do it in contrast to our cultural norms, we call these behaviors dishonorable. So who is not being honorable, really? That kind of being judgmental about all of Nature, and placing it and all of its millions of species below us and judging them according to our arbitrary cultural standards is what makes humans the ignoble ones. Relative to “dumb animals,” that kind of superior attitude, wrought of neurosis and cultural bias, I would contend also makes us the more moronic of planetmates. As for murder, yes, chimpanzees have been known, quite uncommonly, to murder. What is less passed along is that these are chimps who have lived in proximity to humans. These are not chimps in the wild. Take a look at the movies, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and/or Mighty Joe Young if you want to get an idea of why being around humans might instill murderous rage in an otherwise peaceable primate. Yet when a template for what is truly “good” becomes available — is seen, understood, and is committed to ... in identification and “energetic progress” of it — one truly is lifted out of or past the old dynamic. Eventually the unhelpful patterns fade into insignificance for lack of interest in them. In the example of the alcoholic, this would be the phase wherein the new sober life — with its new patterns of social interaction, new routines of sober activity, and new passions and directions — is arrived at and implemented in one’s life, leaving little interest in retreating into drugs anymore. The major difference between the Primal evolution I am describing and that kind of development in a 12-step program is that through the primal process one can access one’s truest, one’s deepest and strongest, guidance and passions as to what that new life will be like. Being our deepest and most desired self, when realized, it is much easier to adhere to its patterns. It is, indeed, the source of all the positive passions a person can manifest in one’s life. Janov would not know of this even truer self — deeper even than the real self, it being the Divine Self — or these deeper patterns of personal being for his paradigm did not include the possibility of these experiences; and his framework did not allow for the deep experiences required or the time needed to access them. For one thing, to access these kinds of experiences one typically had to continue the primal process past the integration of childhood and birth traumas and to begin… 3. From birth on — even before birth as the experiences a mother has are constituted by culture and affect therefore what a prenate experiences to at least some degree — culture puts a stamp on us. The cultural impression delimits the profile of our being and constrains our actions while facilitating others of ours. It opens and closes doors at the same time. Within the outlines of that template, however, we are required to operate and make less fundamental choices. Those choices, patterned and restrained by one’s culture, vary from the most trivial ... what to have for breakfast ... to the profound and life-altering. This, for example, would involve decisions about career and spouse. And something has happened in the current historical era ... something integral to these times being labeled postmodern ... that has made those choices more difficult than they ever have been in history. Yet potentially more freeing, more fruitful, more productive of freedom and felicity, more fulfilling and satisfying can those decisions be than ever before. For in these times — immersed in a multicultural soup with near infinite numbers of potentials and choices — we are responsible, more than ever before, and not as much culture-family- society, for choosing and creating our identity, our path in life. Indeed, the hero’s dream depictions of the winged warrior hint at that in being reminiscent of the myth of Icarus, who had artificial wings pasted upon him, which caused him to travel too close to the sun and away from Earth (too far away from reality?) and therefore, the wax adhesive on his wings melting from the sun (the natural consequence of a solar theology), they fall off, resulting in an ignoble plunging to Earth and to death. Furthermore, the hero’s dreams point to their roots and solution in that in the streets of the city, through whose canyon walls between skyscrapers the hero flies, are seen shackled and regimented hordes of figures with the faces of babies and infants.
