My children and husband run to me.

Wolves sniffing palms.

My beautiful beasts.

They know as I collapse:

The virus is reshaping me as it had them.

I cry. Thoughts shrink. Humanity fades.

I howl. Fear passes. Joy begins:

We are a family reunited.

West, North and South boast about their sunsets and auroras. "Why are you so sanguine?" they ask East.
"For I get to bestow every new day."

Zombie limped
Into town
Thinking maybe
A friend for dinner
Would be nice
Down one street
Then another
Not one soul
To be found
Realizing he had
Overstayed his welcome
He kicked a bone
Down the street
And went looking
For another town

Because fall
Had taken
Too long
And plaid tights
Always made
Her feel
More serious
Who cared
If she
Really wasn't
Straight face
Hard to keep
She laughed
Jokingly
While demanding
A favor
Because long days
Deserved a poem
Nice words
To make
Her smile
From a boy
Who just might
Obey

“Oh no! A mermaid pirate!” the boatswain says.

“Mermaid pirate infers I’m a mermaid that’s chosen piracy. In fact, I’m a pirate turned into a mermaid.”

“A… pirate mermaid?”

“Aye.”

“Well, you’re very cute.”

“Oh you,” she giggles with a wave. “Now, GIVE ME YER GOLD!”

Fool runnings:
I sit in the lanai. Wails reverberate through our home. 750 sq ft of duality: safety and imprisonment. I am not what you need. Choking, smothered, assaulted by what you feel.
Nobody’s perfect. Why won’t you yield?

Two clown dolls
Sunning themselves
In a window
Relaxed yet ragged
Their conversation
Not serious at all
Just happy to be
In each others
Company
Autumn lending
An air of transience
Clouds racing by
On blustery winds
Admire their
Obvious friendship
Glimpsed through glass
Briefly

“All this love, lost in shared dreams we forget.”

She splays six of his fingers. “We’ll keep trying.”

The world fades as he splays four of hers. “Remember.”

He awakens with six fingers out.

Elsewhere, she adds a four to a list. “That’s ten. Wait. It’s a phone number?”

“Whatever happened to the Wunderkind?”

“The super boy from the future sent back to save it? He was actually an agent of a future global totalitarian regime, placed to ensure their fascist timeline is inevitable.”

“So, there is no hope.”

“No, there’s one: He rebelled.”

A side-armed screen out to the sticks
The chorus rose;
the mob: "Pick six!"
A promising career;
Or just a gridiron fable?
