Day 20 #SciArtSeptember prompt is meander so I am sharing geologist & paleontogist Alice Wilson (1881-1964) with the Ottawa River. 🧪👩🏼‍🔬⚒️ #histsci

A job in the Mineralogy Division of the U of Toronto Museum was her entry into #geology. In 1909 as a museum assistant with Geological Survey of Canada

Linocut portrait of a young Alice Wilson with her hands under her chin printed in gold ink. Behind her is her own geological map of the Ottawa Valley with the different features on collaged translucent Japanese papers in raspberry, purple, yellow, pale blue, and beige in inks of similar but darker hues. “OTTAWA RIVER” is marked but the final R is obscured by her head.

In order to understand early modern science, images are no less significant than words. A new #NotesandRecords special issue examines a wide range of images, from true-to-life drawings to carefully conceived schematics: royalsocietypublishing.org/rsnr/issue/8... #HistSci #HistSTM

Interesting reading. But this line from the author felt piercing, “note: I personally view wanting to be first to a discovery as a relatively fixed behavioral quality of scientists for at least the next few generations.” When did we become about priority > purpose? #scisci #metascience #histsci

He catalogued 98,721 letters. He did math in his head at night to hold off doubt. When even that failed, Lewis Carroll invented a gridded card so he could write in bed without lifting his hands from the sheets.

Florentino Ameghino, pioneer of Argentine paleontology, was born #OTD 1854. He was a key figure in the development of science in the country. The Ameghino crater, located north of Sinus Successus on the Moon, is named in his honor—a very rare privilege for a paleontologist

History of science & #BookHistory friends: What was the size of the initial print run of Hooke's Micrographia?

(I've frequently seen the 1st edition referred to as a bestseller, but haven't found a source that confirms how many copies the Royal Society commissioned...)

She required a locked room in every house. She moved with two hundred boxes. She took the children to slaughterhouses, photographed Dali and Kirk Douglas, and left 150,000 negatives mostly undeveloped.

29 August 1831. Faraday connects a battery to a coil on an iron ring. The needle on a second coil jumps, falls back to zero while the current still flows, and jumps the other way when he disconnects. Every generator and transformer is that ring.

1785. Coulomb hangs a needle from a silver wire so fine that one degree of twist measures a force of a few billionths of a newton, and finds that the force between charges falls with the square of the distance. Franklin's rod came first.
