Resistance then ceased and the Carnation surrendered, with 10 dead and 30 wounded. A series of courts martial followed: 32 of the Carnation's crew were convicted of cowardice and sentenced to transportation. Sergeant Chapman received the death sentence, and was hanged. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

Taking the schooner by surprise, they boarded and captured her, and continued on their way. Some days later two Spanish privateers sighted and chased them. Unable to resist, they were forced to surrender and were taken to Cuba as prisoners, where one man died in captivity. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

3 Oct 1796 // 20-gun 6th-rate HMS Narcissus was lying at anchor off Nassau when struck by a sudden and violent storm. Her cables parted and she was carried across the anchorage until she struck a sand bar, grounded, and rapidly broke up. Remarkably, no lives were lost. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

Unfortunately the colours were Spanish. The frigate was the 40-gun Santa Sabina, and the lugger had managed to run straight into the Spanish fleet. Other ships were approaching, and escape or resistance were both impossible. When fired upon, HMS Experiment surrendered. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

Both current naval vessels and the en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of... include names such as Akdeniz, Karadeniz, Ege and Marmara, and terms such as Derya, which mean ‘sea’ itself, have also been adopted.
It’s great fun to see all these interesting names lined up.

Peter so much deserves the praise he is getting from all quarters, especially from N.A.M. Rodger, for the masterpiece he has written about Thomas Cochrane. Such a brilliant book!

This was my first time reading one of Robert Stern's books. I thought it was pretty good - solid writing, good use of primary sources, good selection of secondary sources, perspective from both Japanese and US sides.

The enquiry placed blame on neither ship. This caused a lengthy legal battle between the Admiralty and the Mendip Range's owners, with the latter's final appeal being dismissed in the House of Lords in 1921. Both were dismissed the Service. Cdr Davidson was reprimanded for remaining absent from his ship for too long. The real culprit, however, was the antiquated and confused RN night signalling system, and long-overdue improvements were finally made following this incident. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

The final fireship, HMS Amity, was fended off by the French and damaged a pinnace when she exploded at 1am. Meanwhile the explosive casks and torpedo-catamarans went off loudly and spectacularly but without effect. The attack achieved very little. (Image: Wikimedia Commons) #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory
