#Stray

That habitual hair behind her ear thing -

she's missed a bit - bugs her almost as much as the misplaced

"maybe not"

the last time they met to

the sound of a stray busker between tube platforms

Singing

"Hey you've got to hide your love away."

@merrildsmith.bsky.socialSep 18, 2026, 11:16 AM

Good morning! I missed last Friday. I went in a different direction for today's #PoemsAbout #Strays. Thanks as always to @alanparrywriter.co.uk and @thebrokenspine.co.uk

Night Birds

A stray thought f l u t t e r e d

into my mind

crossing neuron seas
on albatross wings

collecting shiny flotsam
with magpie dedication

gathering others

a murder of crows

a murmuration

filled my dream horizons.

The thought constructed a calamity nest,
in it, laid an anxiety egg

that hatched words like a star
shedding light

silvering the surface,
sinking below.

Thank you @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk - it's Friday again. This feels less like a poem and more like a tiny biography to recognise 30 years of an amazing organisation: Ben's Centre www.benscentre.org
#PoemsAbout #Strays

Straying
A wet spring evening, ten years ago or so, With leaves taking a lashing, Boxed saplings twisting
Wind whistling through perimeter walls of late Victorian buildings
Under parasols in Leopold square
He recognised you,
In a corner sitting out the rain, watchful, cold, aware of Every movement from the door Of a forgotten Italian restaurant,
A youthful man with the dog end of a cigarette, Trying to belong, sitting with style,
Belying his worth with a stained shirt and trainers With trenches, where seams should have been.
Sock-less in an unfashionable way.
Divergent paths,
Though you sat together, learned together, Now my boy went to sit with you again, Offering a new cigarette,
Allowing you to stay out of the rain a little longer, Lessening the pressure or distain of the waiting staff.
You told a story of lost work, A family who cared less than they could Of dispute and disharmony,
Three months on the Sheffield streets
Nowhere to go, no one to love,
Medicating numbness and peace of mind, Not dry or clean enough for the Arches, Homeless, down, out and more,
My boy gave you his socks,
A Brave acceptance, despite your circumstances!
Ten pounds in cash, all we had And you left with a thank you, Not wishing to embarrass further, I hope you found Ben's Centre, eventually
A way home.

Back from visiting family and a different region. The anxiety follows though like that hungry dog.

Here's my response to today's #PoemsAbout prompt #Strays. It probably needs development but maybe there's an idea here to work on. Many thanks @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk. Looking forward to reading and responding to other offerings from the #PoetryCommunity

Stray
By Dawn Mclachlan

I read once that shrews don't really understand that we exist. In their minds we are as vast and unknowable as mountains, as silent and slow moving as trees. Their hearts beat 1000 times a minute and to them we are glacial in our pace.
Imagine living in a world where it's possible to stray wild beyond the comprehension of man.

We once placed our tent
Across the tracks of a shrew
And still he ran through

Good morning everyone, still not finding time to write much this week but did manage this draft poem for #poemsabout #strays. Will pop back later to read others! #poetry #poetrycommunity

Education

you showed no interest
or aptitude
for angles, Angles
Saxons or parallels
more the flames
licking the classroom walls
before they expelled you

forty years later
your social media
hate-filled ignorance
smoke screen across the stars
denying our rainbow reality

I imagine
a life spent running
towards where
from what
you neither know
nor care

A Spanish-language contribution (with English translation) for this week's #PoemsAbout theme #Strays @thebrokenspine.co.uk

Inspired by a passing encounter years ago in Cartagena, Colombia - nicknamed “La Heroica” and site of what is widely regarded as the British Empire’s greatest naval disaster.

el heroico

dentro de las murallas
de la ciudad

cojeando
la puerta del reloj

y la vendedora
declaró
qué mediohombre

este perro de raza,
callejero

tuerto y cojo,
ay

como
blas de lezo
the heroic

inside the
city walls

limping
the clock tower gate

and the street vendor
declared
what a half-man

this noble breed,
a stray

one-eyed and lame
ay,

like
blas de lezo

A Menagerie of Misfits

They keep their distance
I keep mine.
We meet in narrow places
where need outweighs caution.

Their world is built
from small permissions.
A step closer,
a touch shared
without a bite.
A moment without retreat.

Affection isn’t promised.
It arrives like a blunt fact,
without ceremony,
without apology.

I take what is offered.
I don’t ask for more.
The truth stays simple:
I wasn’t their saviour.

my thanks to @thebrokenspine.co.uk and @alanparrywriter.co.uk for hosting #PoemsAbout #Strays here's one from life in the 1960's look forward to reading others

Sanctuary
 My mother’s orange oak table
Stained by the patina of
Tears and furnish polish –
The one that later went for
Prayerful firewood –
Sat heavy on its haunches,
Having legs decorated like stockings
Of an old duchess,
All garlands and balustraded seams.
In earlier times mum’s lame ducks
Would sit around it drinking tea,
Men who had left their minds in Normandy
And young girls with short skirts
And shorter memories
Forgetting that hearts will mend.
I was too young to have regrets
Armoured in childhood as I was. © Bernard Pearson

For #PoemsAbout #strays Incibbled this together yesterday. Needs work, though I like my original idea. Thanks @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk as always. Look forward to reading the other #poetry offerings over today and the weekend.

A poem by Debbie Ross entitled
Stray Cat Strut

She slunk out at 14
all teenage angst and Cat Woman anti-hero style.

She got her claws
into all the glitter, all the guys, though she was the one mauled in the process.

On the street,
drugged, drunk, destroyed
by dreams and demons.

She eyes you warily,
she can be a pussy cat or a puma -
always independent, restless.

A weed is just a wildflower in the wrong place,
So they say,
I find myself collecting things,
Sayings, empty snail shells, other people's anxieties,
Everything has it's place,
Except for those stray nipple hairs,
They, can go elsewhere.
