One of my SME sentences that resonates with this would have to be "I remember him and everything he does yet I can't seem to remember his face". Even though I remember the history of our relationship and what he does I forget the physical aspect that ties it to reality #hwa4 #understandingeffect

Goffman is basically saying we change how we present ourselves depending on who were around. Like with friends, family, school, or work, we adjust the way we talk and act so it fits that situation and the people in it. #hwa4 #translationacts

The idea that for so long the bible was not even readable by the average person and they just had to trust whatever the church said about it is insane to think about. Completely different time from today. #hwa4

words/sounds put side-to-side with what is actually spoken. In other words, fluency to me would be the amount of similarity between what I expect to come next versus what actually does come next. #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

A question it left behind is that how does someone create a way to understand a language that’s so different and it still works? It shows a lot of creativity from Stalling and the performers.

#hwa4 #yingelishiparty Through this whole part about travel I've felt a bit like a stranger. Some of the words sound almost familiar to me, but especially in the context things like "ticket" and "flight 667" are being lost on me

@chillmountaineer.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 2:49 AM

Therefore, I personally would not classify this as fluent to me. However, I would imagine the same result for non-native English speakers where they do not see English as something fluent for them. If we classify “fluency” here, I see it as the assumption of succeeding #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

As I'm trying to make my own sea shanty I'm getting trapped in the genre of very depressive storytelling and experiences for the song. I feel like the next SMEs will try and push into the why for my bias towards more depressive storytelling as a form of expression #hwa4 #genrepressure

The whole yingelishi experience absolutely captivated every brain function available, yet simultaneously i had moments where i completely zoned out. This sonic journey was not always easy to navigate and sometimes things got weird or confusing but things still made sense #hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes

Looking at the English side, I felt like a speaker. Looking at the Chinese side, I felt like a stranger. I wish i could understand the Chinese part so I would be able to figure out which side comes first to a person who knows both the languages.

I think fluency in this specific soundscape would therefore depend on your subjective view of how you interpret sound and language. As I mentioned in previous posts, I tried to associate sounds common to me with succeeding sounds/words I would use in the English language. #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

@amanraj07.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 2:47 AM

It changed how I think about translation. I always thought translating meant getting the meaning right, learning in a different way. Here, the feeling is what gets carried across to the listeners, and meaning comes second. Which is unlike anything I have seen before.

with the speaker but it never aligned in length of pronunciation and my assumption of succeeding word sounds. This really is my native perception of being an English speaker attempting to match familiar sounds to commonly associated sounds/phrases in English that I would use. #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

#hwa4 #understandingeffect there is some scarcity to begin with, i don't understand that part. It just seemed like it was performing, telling me what I wanted to hear, that me listening to a lot of genres is some kind of profound thing when it really is just that i attach myself to many identities

@rw20mmc.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 2:45 AM

I feel like ontological slippage is the idea of what a being means or the form of it being broken bit by bit just like in the translation of religious texts or my thoughts on the yingelishi texts #hwa4 #wherethingsslip

@gabi-senior-year.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 2:45 AM

#hwa4 #yingelishiparty At a certain point during this listen, I stopped reading what I am "supposed" to hear and just listened. I found that when (for example, in Gratitude) when I stopped looking at what I was supposed to hear my brain really struggled to pick up what was close to English sounding

@kneeuhh.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 2:45 AM

Omg I finally get it. The singer is reading the large text in the middle, while under it is what it literally translates to, and at the top is what we hear in english and the Chinese translation for what sounds like english. I feel so dumb, I had to use google translate lol. #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

@amanraj07.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 2:45 AM

The sadness and calm landed in me more than the words did. Even when I understood the English, the feeling was kind of stronger. So I felt it before I stopped to read the English side.

There were some parts and words that felt familiar to me, but not quite. I frequently noticed the English pronunciation of a word or character that sounded like “dark.” When it was pronounced it felt unnatural to me in that I found myself trying to pronounce it along #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

@bakedbyjuj.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 2:44 AM

i totally feel included in Yingelishi, i think any english speaker is going to have a very interesting experience when listening and following along with the lyrics #hwa4 #yingelishiparty
