the skull belonged to a Black servant who had requested that his remains be returned to his homeland after his death.
Instead, he was buried in the local churchyard.

He explained that the skull had remained inside the house through numerous changes of occupants and furniture because people were reluctant to risk the consequences of removing it.

At that time, it was regarded as a protective object believed to keep ghosts away. However, as the Victorian era progressed, increasingly sinister stories developed around it.

Residents believed that disturbing it would cause the building to shake, produce frightening noises, and bring misfortune upon those responsible.
