THE FOURTH DESCENT — FETAL MALNUTRITION

Enter the Ego

In any case, this story of our last four weeks before our grand entrance into the world, our societies, and our families, is one of increasing pain at our origins. Something had to happen. All of that feverish repression of pain must have had some consequences for us experientially.

Indeed, it did. What we next look into is the creation and construction of that psychic component unique to humans — the Ego.

In addition, the tasks of mothering, for that devil-may-care chimp mother includes nothing like what is required of human mothers in terms of pacifying the infant. Being more mature and less helpless, chimp and gorilla babies do not need to, nor have they evolved to be able to, scream and wail for attention and to express their needs like human newborns do. That is another thing that is distinctly different between us and our relatives in Nature: Human babies require more pacifying, thus more attention in that regard.

Granted, human babies are in more pain because their needs are greater, being more helpless; and those needs cannot be perfectly satisfied, so they cry about that.

And for certain, our infants are required to do more communicating about their needs to try to get them met; for we are more helpless and needy after birth, less able to fend for ourselves. For example, we cannot even turn over or crawl, let alone grasp — as our chimp and gorilla relatives can — until considerably later after birth. We need to shake our arms and wail and can do little more. Holding out our hand or reaching, or indicating the object of our desire by…

e) Culture — which is the accumulated, infinitely varied, and unavoidably flawed understandings of how to behave and survive in the world, developed over time, and different in every society — steps in where mind sharing ... what we disrespectfully call instinct ... should be. So here scientists are correct in saying that planetmates have instinct and we have culture to do the same thing for humans. Only, framed the way it usually is by scientists, it is used as another way of touting our superiority instead of being explained in a way that would tell what that substitution of culture for instinct actually is: Culture is an artificial substitute for what we have lost in splitting from Divinity ... or shared mind ... and it is a sufficient-for-survival construct. Yet culture is not as refined, or as close to Truth and Reality, or perfect, even, as what other planetmates have that is called instinct. Culture, in this way, is collective Ego. For Ego can be defined as the artificial consciousness construct that each individual develops to be able to function, after one has lost one’s more expanded consciousness that one had in the womb. This development — that of Ego — also has its own chapter in which to shine, coming up next.

…into the distance. When not nursing, the child might be clinging to the mother’s fur, oftentimes not even in direct view of the mother’s eyes. At any rate, the mother, being clung to, appears unaffected and seemingly absent-minded, or watching and monitoring its environ- ment and the behavior of others in the social group in its vicinity.

Do not think this means planetmate mothers are detached and unfeeling toward their infants. Quite the contrary! They will show such a dedication to the care of their youngest as to put many human mothers (not all) to shame. Mother and child will stay together for life, in some species. Planetmate mothers have been known to die of grief if their infant dies. Just that the crucial and delicate time of infant vulnerability for humans has been gone beyond for our pri- mate relatives, during their time in the womb. They are “past all that.” This delicate time, this “external gestation” for humans re- quires incredibly more focus on the part of human mothers. The bonding that results from all that effort and mothering has some salutary benefits. The fact that it cannot be done perfectly? As it is done for primates during their corresponding development which occurs in the womb? Well, not so much.

…which caused us to block all that out. We are born with a tabula rasa, a mental blank slate, because we have repressed out of our consciousness (we have created an unconscious) all that we are and could be if we had not suppressed, re- pressed, and forgotten who we are. So that,

d) Onto this blank slate we pour all the necessary learnings we need to survive; we do this through a process of parenting. However, unlike the mind sharing of other planetmates, we are only going to get any learnings we do as funneled through an even more narrowed consciousness, one even more split from Divinity or the mind we share in common with the Universe. And that more narrowed consciousness is that of our caregivers, one’s parents, usually. Thus,

e) Culture — which is the accumulated, infinitely varied, and unavoidably flawed understandings of how to behave and survive in the world, developed over time, and different in every society — steps in where mind sharing ... what we disrespectfully call instinct ... should be.

Now, think about humans’ mother-infant interaction. Compare the two. When we observe human mothering, let us say the mother is breast or bottle feeding her child, you might see the mother and baby looking deeply and for prolonged periods into each other’s faces. The same kind of intense interaction is characteristic of play times be- tween the two. Each is fully attentive to the nuances of facial expressions and sound emitted by the other. This is a lengthy inten- sive education for human infants in the finer points of facial expression. The mother might be making sounds, cooing, using words and talking, perhaps singing or humming in order to soothe and pacify.

Lay that alongside what we normally see in the mother-infant interaction of our primate relatives. Let us take, for example, chimps and gorillas. In Nature, chimps and gorillas do very little of that. A mother might be observed nursing, but her face is often looking off…

b) Since our brains are too big to be able to stay in the womb the twenty-one months it would need for us to be born at the level of development comparable to other species when they are born, we are born prematurely with our brains not fully developed enough. Perhaps not developed enough to do that “mind sharing” that other species are able to do?

c) At any rate, then we are born with even more pain, birth trauma. This causes us to lose any last traces of connection with Divinity or the participation of the individual conscious- ness in that of the group. So, indeed, we are born with a “blank slate.” Not because we have nothing, no instinct, no sense of self, no prior understandings or proclivities, or even instructions, but rather because all that we did have, unlike all other species, was wiped off our “slate,” our consciousness, during those prenatal and perinatal times of excruciating pain,…

Language

This motherese and cooing during evolution led eventually to lan- gauge. Certainly the roots of language are in the need for communication around survival while foraging in water. However, with secondary altriciality and the long extra time of mothering, that language ability was facilitated and enhanced. Along the same lines, the intense interaction between mother and child led to extra facility in what we had already been developing in facial expressions for the purpose of communicating. Like language, it is in the mother-infant interaction that particular skill is refined.

The uniqueness of this mother-infant time is easy to see when you compare us with other species. For example, think for a moment of the way we normally see a chimp or gorilla baby with its mother. Certainly they interact. Definitely they will occasionally play. How- ever, to a much greater degree, what you observe is a detached attitude of the mother with little to no eye-to-eye contact. That makes sense, when you think of it. For the babies being more mature when chimps and gorillas are born, they are past that time of excessive dependency required of humans. That means that chimps and gorillas can much more take care of themselves, even to the point that they do not need to be held but can cling to the mother’s fur. It follows that extra motherly attention is not necessary.

At any rate, what I am saying is that many planetmates have a kind of shared mind ... they participate in a kind of field of mind or understanding ... and that gives them the ability to know things they were not taught. In a sense, the species did the learning over the course of its evolution, and it is shared mentally by all members. If that sounds unbelievable, realize that what I just described is exactly the way one new biologist, Rupert Sheldrake, describes his theory of morphogenetic fields.5 More about that later.

In any case, now we have lost that shared mind. We have lost that ability. More correctly, we believe we have lost it, for we retain some ability of shared mind, or telepathy. Still, for the most part we ignore it, dismiss it, or at least downplay it, goaded on by the emptiness inside, wrought of so much forgetting.

What instinct has to do with secondary altriciality and culture is that

a) In the womb just before birth we experience an hellacious time which splits us off from our connection with Divinity. This is known as fetal malnutrition, and because it is a traumatic time, which we needed to push out of our mind, we sup- pressed others of our abilities along with it. Among them is that mind sharing with other beings and that felt connection with Divinity. But then,…

Secondary Altriciality and the Origins of Culture

The other part of prematurity is the helplessness after birth and the extra dependency of the baby on maternal care for survival and growth. The additional time of helplessness that humans have is termed secondary altriciality.

With prematurity came secondary altriciality. And with second- ary altriciality came culture.

Let me explain.

Sociability

The intensive care required of newborns created an exceptionally important time of one-on-one engagement of the infant with its caregivers, usually its mother. Right at the start, we are forced into socializing, however we can. We need to communicate in any way possible to get our needs met. And we are helpless to any ministrations that our caregivers might put upon us.

We become more social than our relatives in Nature. By that I mean the increased dependence required of human infants resulted in much greater maternal care and interaction between mother and infant. Thus the need to communicate and nurture led to cooing, led to motherese — which is the baby talk and cooing that mothers adopt naturally and for humans universally, as the way to talk to its baby.

In this light, it is likely that ideas like instinct will have as much importance in the future as the convoluted theories of astrologers who, prior to the heliocentric revolution in thought, attempted to make sense out of the movement of the stars. Consciousness re- search, with its findings in related fields such as quantum physics, transpersonal psychology, prenatal and perinatal psychology, and the new biology will, in time, demonstrate to all of science (it has been demonstrated to those of us in these fields already) that it is con- sciousness, Experience, subjectivity that is fundamental to Reality. Science will eventually acknowledge that insubstantial yet profound no-thing — that Experience, Consciousness, or mental-emotional stuff — is shared between beings, who we formerly thought were absolutely separate from each other but who we will then know actually are not and actually share identity, in a sense. In doing so it will bring clarity to our understanding of these fantastical behaviors of planetmates and make the idea of instinct to be like the emperor with no clothes — sad and laughable.

…gestations and the near perfect nurturing for an additional twelve months by a Divinely-designed biological process in the womb.

We began the process of becoming human, meaning being separate from all other Earth Citizens, at the time that narrow pelves, nine-month (premature) gestations, birth pain and trauma for moth- ers and newborns, and dependency on caregivers for the first few years of life became the norm.

So it was that standing up ... while not strictly a fall from grace, in and of itself ... set the whole process of human’s descent from Nature in motion.

Prematurity was the compromise, the imperfect solution. It meant that, in order to make up for the loss of all that time of maturation in the womb which other species are afforded, we would have a longer time of abject helplessness after birth. This postnatal time of one year, comparable to the time our nearest relatives in Nature spend in the womb, would require careful, focused, and thoroughly all-encompassing care by the mothers or other caregivers. It would be accordingly exhausting and time intensive. This meant that needs of the infant could never be perfectly satisfied.

Human mothers now needed also more expertise in child-caring than those in Nature. The knowledge and skill required could never be ideal. Indeed, there would be a gap in what the baby needed and what mothers could provide. Compared to Nature, human infants were needy, difficult, time-consuming, and frustrating in their being so helpless and so long to mature. This would have consequences for child abuse later on, but in the beginning it simply meant human mothers had a much greater and more difficult workload than their sisters in Nature.

Thus, premature birth and narrower pelves — concomitant with bipedalism — won out. Survival advantages won out over healthy, happy newborns and relatively easy, painless births with long gesta-…

Prematurity Was the Compromise

Gradually over that time, the compromise we have today was arrived at. Pregnancies would be shorter — nine months — allowing for the economic and survival advantages of that. As for the long period of maturation required for the brain, that would be taken care of by the infant being born more and more premature in order to get the head out at all, regardless that it was still traumatic. Thus, roughly half the brain’s development would occur in the womb under the direction of a process of Nature determined and perfected over the course of millions of years. The other half would happen after birth, under the care and direction of considerably less perfect humans.

We are born premature. Relative to virtually all the rest of Nature, whose development of its brain occurs under the aegis of Nature, that is, before birth, we are half-borns. We are only half ready for life at the time of birth.

Prematurity was the compromise, the imperfect solution. It meant that, in order to make up for the loss of all that time of maturation in the womb which other species are afforded, we would have a longer time of abject helplessness after birth.

Even then, we are not able to maintain that perfect choreography if we were to make random new changes in our movements. Yet birds have infinitely creative and seemingly random changes perfectly choreographed into their movements. Changes which are instigated by.... Well, here you see again, how magical! Instigated by no one in particular; they just occur for all participants simultaneously, not even a leader or a director in sight. Yet imagine those human dancers making endless new patterns in their routines, unplanned, spontane- ous, without direction, and perfectly synchronized in the movement and steps among all the participants. Never going to happen, right?

Yet we attribute the ability of the dolphins, fish, birds, and insects to do that to instinct, and then we do not have to try to understand it anymore. We give something a name and consider it job done.

Then we say the idea of shared mind — a shared field of energy comprised of knowledge or, as I have been asserting, Experience (subjectivity, consciousness), which is the only thing that exists, being shared among multiple perceivers at the same time — which also might explain it, is fantastical. Yet this idea of consciousness shared is an idea that our consciousness research is leading us toward.4

Why We Can’t Get No Satisfaction and What It Has to Do With Being Born Helpless. Parents Are Imperfect ... Biology Is Relatively Perfect

Human Nature, Culture, Pelvic Size, and Plato’s Cave: Needs Which We as Newborns Ache to Fulfill Are Satisfied by Other Species Perfectly

For millions of years, the factors of mothers needing wide pelves to accommodate birthing healthy twenty-one month gestated newborns, vied for natural selection against the economic pressures for females to have shorter gestations to return to full foraging and to be able, with smaller pelves, to move and while carrying something, like a baby, run more quickly.

So these genes of instinct evolved over millions of years some- how knew in advance, millions of years before now, what a particular flock of birds was going to do at a particular millisecond of time (and all birds in all flocks in every millisecond of time over the course of millions of years). Yet instinct is supposed to be the down-to-earth, real-world, “scientific” explanation for these incredible movements of birds, insects, and other similar planetmates. Instinct implies a kind of foreknowledge, premonition, or clairvoyance wilder than anything imaginable (and all contained within that microscopically small package of DNA), but somehow the idea of telepathy — what I am calling mind-sharing — is considered unscientific and too fantastical to be believed.

The same with dolphins and fish. We see their precise synchro- nous movements, as they move perfectly together in swimming and jumping, and we say that is instinctive. We cannot know how they could possibly perfectly choreograph their movements far more pre- cisely than any contestants on Dancing with the Stars are able to, even after much training. Actually it is more like the choreography of groups of humans that is arrived at after months of hard work to get it right.

That’s quite the watch!

It assumes, also, that all the learning that we observe planetmates doing concurrent with the manifestation of said instinctive acts are not actual “learning” but are part of that clockwork-like predeter- mination of any and all events — no matter how tiny or insignificant — which is caused by the infinitesimal configuration of its inner “gears” of DNA. And, remember, no consciousness involved! Hell, that’s not necessary, right?

Not fantastical enough, this behavior is not just of a crude sort, for example, a bird’s ability to create a nest. No, somehow instinct is said to account for the fact that birds are able to, not only fly in formation, but make specific synchronous movements in full flight among all of them, and to do it always and an infinite numbers of times, all without any blemishes in their choreography, or mistake, or collision among them. Supposedly, these genes of millions of years development know when and how each individual bird in flight, throughout that span of eons, is supposed to move in any particular millisecond that each individual bird is in flight.

Nevertheless, the critical change in all that is our most unusual premature births. And this is what we look at next ... the earlier births required of human babies. And coincident to that, I address secondary altriciality, which has to do with the extra time needed for growth outside the womb and in the company of family and society. Gestations were cut short. “External gestation” — which is what some scholars have called this period of brain maturation occurring outside the womb and in the company of society — was prolonged
