Poem: Wants & Needs
"Do not forsake me oh my darling"
My mother loved that song
Grace Kelly & Gary Cooper
a love tested by circumstance
not by the need for individuation.

She did not build a spicy marriage
we had a home, a family inside
we had the rhythms of repetition
with no need for crash bang boom
there being so much to do in the living.

We had love.

I do not know when the skeptism crept in
the desire, the need for fizzle and sizzle.
I know only that desire became a need
and in that need I lost the want
presuming that it would always be there.

Now I have me.

All my needs are met,
desired, sizzling, brave and strong.
Wanting what my mother had, and realizing
for the first time, that it has to be built.
That my mother built it, and we grew in it.
I do not have what I want.

One might imagine thatch
and climbing roses round the door,
all oddly dusted as by a shamal.

The rice-flour crust
is burning bright and golden, crisp and
crazed, and flaking into jungle shadows.

If a conductor
were to flourish this, from oven straight
to podium — oh crumbs!

Unrisen, doubled, warmed,
and waiting to accept the slices of tomato
sliding – watch-like – into hummus..

Strangely light and limp.
but simple as ABC — the best thing since... well
the best thing since this.

Dark and dense,
a long time baking — caraway
to counter Prussian wind.
