Effortless and compelling as he gives out orders to his crew. Big and hearty as he slings his arm across my shoulders and bids me to let him help pack my things. A reassuring distraction as we walk the streets of my village one last time, letting myself into what is now a stranger's house with the spare key I kept tucked under the rock by the front gate. Soft chuckles almost to himself as his eyes grow oddly distant, the sound matched by a soft huffing outside as his dragon's eye fills the window to see its rider within. There is a confused but friendly little chuckle as I present him with the small wooden box on its reed-woven tray; staring at the salt and dried cracker bread inside with confusion as if he'd never seen such a thing before. Maybe he hasn't? Clearing my throat, I wet my fingertip and touch the salt lightly, transferring the smallest amount to my tongue. He mimics me, grimacing at the taste, then follows as I break off a small piece of the cracker bread and eat that too. “Be welcome in my home,” I recite as I return box and tray to their table by the door. There wasn't much in the little cottage that I want to take with me. Or, to be more precise: I cannot be sure what here will be useful to bring. My writing tablet, of course. Leaving it would be like leaving behind my leg, and the chance to document the secretive orc culture few humans had ever glimpsed. Orcs love bold spices, growing a variety on their mountains + medicinal herbs for ills like barkskin & lungcrush. They say they've come to establish trade /w humans, but some in Tal's village still remember the wars

The great wedge-shaped head of his dragon stoops low enough to sniff at me. I hold very, very still as its breath blows warmly through my hair as mightily as a strong sea wind. I look the orc lord in the eyes as I spell it out for him. I am committed to my course now, even if that wind of madness which carried me here has now utterly abandoned me, leaving me adrift in strange waters alone. “Go,” I gestured to the angel. “Stairs.” “As you wish,” he murmured. Somehow he made climbing down a ladder look graceful. I was not nearly as deft as I descended into the cabin, so close and quiet after the chill of night air. A narrow galley stretched most of the port side, just a sad sink and single-burner stove; above, there were mismatched cupboards with railed shelves, crowded with the usual detritus of human habitation. The air carried the mingled scents of river water, old wood, engine oil, damp rope, and coffee. Jean stared around listlessly at the cramped but practical cabin. Though stooped slightly because of the low ceiling, he was just as beautiful as he had been in the attic. When he looked at me, sapphire eyes were mournful. “You should rest, mon chevalier. Your body needs it.” “No,” I groaned. “Not yet.” I dragged my eyes away from the holy-flame glitter of his eyes.
