A spotless Ladybird landed on my glove!
Put it on my Rose bud to eat the greenfly!
Are these spotless ones rare?

Hello #autumn Possibly the last ladybird of the season and the mycelium pushing up strange fruit. Plus a snail, which I postulate has evolved to camouflage against concrete. 5 minute walk at lunchtime today 🇬🇧

Two melanic Harlequin ladybirds on a weathered wooden fence rail. Another of the standard form is on the edge of the rail.
#insects #ladybird #nature #thelittlethings #10minutesfromhome #photography #eastcoastkin

Two Harlequin ladybirds on (Harmonia axyridis) on an old, weathered wooden fence rail which has a good coverage of lichen.
These are the black colour form (melanic) with four orange-red spots.
They have a glossy black wing case marked with four distinct orange-red blotches and a cream or whitish margin around the edge of the pronotum (section between the head and wing cases).
Another glossy, spotted ladybird on the edge of the wooden rail has rounded, orange-red wing cases with black markings.
Harlequin ladybirds are extremely variable, with up to 21 black spots on a red or orange background. There is a melanic form, with two or more red spots on a black background. The head has an obvious white triangle in the centre, something that neither of the other two similarly sized species have.
Originally from Asia, the harlequin ladybird first arrived in the UK in 2004, and has rapidly become one of the most common ladybirds in the country, particularly in towns and gardens. It is one of our larger species and is a voracious predator - it is able to out-compete our native species for aphid-prey and will also eat other ladybirds' eggs and larvae. It can have multiple broods throughout the spring, summer and autumn, which also gives it a competitive edge.

Ladybird J.L. Supreme – Marienkäfer J.L. the Highest, a full-bodied model name. Does it really live up to the hype, being the highest guitar (set) I've ever created? No …

Two Harlequin ladybirds and a ladybird larva on an weathered wooden fence rail.
On yesterday's dog walk🐾
Not the best of pictures but I liked the look of the larva - a tiny alligator?
#insects #ladybird #nature #thelittlethings #10minutesfromhome #photography #eastcoastkin

Two adult Harlequin ladybirds alongside an immature Harlequin ladybird larva. They are on an old, weathered wooden fence rail which has a good coverage of lichen.
The glossy, spotted ladybirds on the left and right have rounded, orange-red wing cases with black markings.
The elongated, dark, spiky-looking creature in the middle is a ladybird larva (often resembling a tiny alligator shape with orange or yellow spot markings), which is an earlier stage in the insect's life cycle.
Harlequin ladybirds are extremely variable, with up to 21 black spots on a red or orange background. There is a melanic form, with two or more red spots on a black background. The head has an obvious white triangle in the centre, something that neither of the other two similarly sized species have.

Good luck ladybug’s or ladybird’s metamorphosis, Indian Wells, Coachella Valley, CA.

#iphonephotography #coloraday #yellowthu #bugsky #insectthurs #photography #ladybug #ladybird #photographersofbluesky #ECK #photographersunited #westcoastkin #milkweed #desert

Newborn ladybug emerges from her pupa as she balances on a desert milkweed. Hard to imagine this ladybird as the stereotypical red-spotted garden love—but it is. This yellow new-born just broke free and will now meander without eating to a safe place while her yellow shell hardens and becomes a place where black-spots-on-a-red-bug bring a smile of recognition. However, this coloration is solely a stereotype. There are many colors, shapes, spot and no spot specimens we may not appreciate as an actual ladybug. And that said, her nearly finished metamorphosis may not develop as imagined because her hardened shell wing protector may become a completely different incarnation. But there is a common thread: four stages of growth with the first as one of 50 tiny yellow eggs, second as a comparatively peckish and ugly spiked bug, third as a small two week stay pupa similar to a butterfly (except this pupa moves around), and four—a birth realized as the photo above. She will wait three days to change color and fly off where she will consume aphid upon destructive aphid for her lifetime—an amazing one to three years.

Boycotting #DHH for being racist makes sense to me. But I see some people wanting everyone to boycott #Ladybird due to its usage of "he" in its docs. It's over the top... "he" in English can be gender-neutral (though that is an older way to use "he"), and many people use it that way with no ill […]
