Buzzed by something flying erratically, I followed it until it landed in the nearby field: A mantis. (I'll bet someone here can ID what kind.)

A yellow, white, and brown butterfly drinks from a light purple flower. The Yellow Albatross grabs hold of French lavender and appears to be shielded from the bright sun. The butterfly’s fore wing catches the light and reflects bright yellow—a tell that she is in fact a female.

Good luck ladybug’s or ladybird’s metamorphosis, Indian Wells, Coachella Valley, CA.

#iphonephotography #coloraday #yellowthu #bugsky #insectthurs #photography #ladybug #ladybird #photographersofbluesky #ECK #photographersunited #westcoastkin #milkweed #desert

Newborn ladybug emerges from her pupa as she balances on a desert milkweed. Hard to imagine this ladybird as the stereotypical red-spotted garden love—but it is. This yellow new-born just broke free and will now meander without eating to a safe place while her yellow shell hardens and becomes a place where black-spots-on-a-red-bug bring a smile of recognition. However, this coloration is solely a stereotype. There are many colors, shapes, spot and no spot specimens we may not appreciate as an actual ladybug. And that said, her nearly finished metamorphosis may not develop as imagined because her hardened shell wing protector may become a completely different incarnation. But there is a common thread: four stages of growth with the first as one of 50 tiny yellow eggs, second as a comparatively peckish and ugly spiked bug, third as a small two week stay pupa similar to a butterfly (except this pupa moves around), and four—a birth realized as the photo above. She will wait three days to change color and fly off where she will consume aphid upon destructive aphid for her lifetime—an amazing one to three years.
