Mistake #17: treating categories like a formality.

Cold readers skip shelves that don’t match the story. Categories are a browse path, not a filing label.

Name your reader — pick the shelf they’d tap first.

Which category would a stranger open?

A scene stalls when nobody has a reason to remain.

Revision filter: for each speaking character, why haven't they left yet? Can't answer? It's a meeting, not a scene.

Why hasn't your protagonist walked out yet?

Mistake #16: treating the export as finished.

Cold readers hit broken breaks, missing italics, or a “Draft” title page. Trust dies first.

Open your product page. Read 3 sample screens as a stranger.

Which 3 would you trust them to judge?

Chapter-exit filter: last line should open a cost, a question, or a choice — not tidy the scene into silence.

If it only restates what already happened, why turn the page?

What does your current last line force next?

Mistake #15: never open your product page on a phone before you share.

Cold readers see title, cover, sample — small. Unfinished = bounce.

Open day one. Scroll as a stranger. Fix what 30s notices — then share.

Which line would make you hesitate first?

Setting isn't scenery.

If a place doesn't raise the cost, tempt a choice, or hide a threat, it's wallpaper — cut it or give it work.

Which detail in your current scene only exists because it looked pretty?

Revision filter: one line for what the character wants in this scene, one for what they fear.

If those never meet on the page, the scene may stay polite when it should get costly.

Where do want and fear collide hardest in your current chapter?

Mistake #14: cover for a large screen — never tested as a thumbnail.

Rich on laptop; mud on phone feed. Browsers decide from that crop.

Fix: shrink to stamp size. Title readable? If not, simplify first.

Which detail vanishes first at feed size?

Setting isn't wallpaper. Move a scene and nothing changes - options, cost, pressure - place is still decoration.

What does this room, street, or weather make harder right now?

Which scene could relocate with zero rewrite?

Dialogue pass: cut the line that only restates what we already know.

Keep the line that reveals what the speaker is hiding from the room — or from themselves.

Which spoken line earns the silence after it?

Common publishing mistake #13: subtitle optional or stuffed with leftover keywords.

Title clever. Subtitle = clarity. Blank = guess. Keyword dump = bounce.
Fix: "This is a ___ about ___." Check both on a phone thumbnail.
Which word earns its place?

Dialogue should move the leverage.

If both leave with the same power they walked in with, it was atmosphere, not story.

Who gained a chip last scene — and who notices first?

Genre shelves the book. A reading motive is the job a stranger hires it for — escape, repair, competence, belonging, ritual. Pick one primary. Aim cover, first blurb line, and sample the same way.

Which motive is your draft hired for?

A past that arrives before the present needs it stalls the page.

Only open a memory when this scene asks a question only memory can answer. Else cut or park it.

Which backstory beat answers a present-scene question — which are still waiting?

A chapter ending on a twist often fades by morning. One ending on a forced choice keeps readers leaning.

Revelation can wait. Decision creates pull: what must they do next that they can't undo?

Which chapter ends on a decision, not a reveal?

Thriller spine: inciting incident, central question, ticking clock. Put the incident early. End chapters with a reason to turn.

A scene that could sit anywhere usually belongs nowhere.

After each scene: what choice did this force that the next cannot ignore? If “none,” it’s padding.

What’s the irreversible consequence of the scene you’re revising tonight?

A scene goal only you know never reaches the reader.

One plain sentence: what does this character want on this page? Cut beats that don’t pressure it.

What’s the page-want for the scene you’re rewriting tonight?

The leaves outside began to turn. The marigolds got put out front.

Kaelen knew that elsewhere, the heart monitors continued to beep.
