Mistake #22: synonym piles in metadata — not phrases a cold reader types.

Write five search phrases a stranger might use. Keep ones that match the book. Drop the rest.

If they searched tonight without the title, which phrase first?

Do you need to pump up those reading numbers on storygraph before the year is over? Do you want to read a short story about a weird time loop on Mars?

Mistake #21: last pages as disposable — no next step after “the end.”

One clear handoff: Book 2, another title, or your storefront.

Would the last page hand a next step — or a blank wall?

Scenes go soft when leverage doesn't move.

At scene end, name who holds more power than at the start — info, obligation, or the chance to walk away. Same grip = talk without a turn.

Who has more leverage when this scene ends than when it began?

Mistake #20: blurb as chapter summary — not a cold-reader promise.

Cut plot retell. Keep three beats: who it's for, the tension, the ending kind.

Would a stranger know the promise — or only the plot?

Easy yeses flatten scenes.

For the choice they make, name what else they want that this yes costs — alliance, secret, preferred self. Free yes = motion without drama.

What does saying yes here cost them that they'll miss later?

Mistake #19: storefront as filing cabinet — one title, no About, no next step.

Cold readers need who you write for + a clear next surface after the sample.

Would a stranger finishing tonight find a next step — or a blank wall?

Vague stakes feel safe — and flat.

Replace "everything is at risk" with tonight's loss: lease, alibi, last willing witness. Can't name it in one noun phrase? Atmosphere without pressure.

What do they lose before midnight if this scene fails?

@ebokiopublishing.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 2:30 PM

Mistake #18: launching book two before reading order is obvious.

Cold browsers need Book 1 / Book 2 clear — and Book 1 one tap away.

Could a stranger reach Book 1 from Book 2 in one tap?

A scene cools when everyone knows the same thing.

Revision filter: list what each speaking character knows that the others don't. Matching lists = a briefing, not a scene.

What does your protagonist know that nobody else in the room knows yet?

#KnowledgeGap #UnevenInfo #IndieFiction #BookSky

@ebokiopublishing.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 2:44 PM

Mistake #17: treating categories like a formality.

Cold readers skip shelves that don’t match the story. Categories are a browse path, not a filing label.

Name your reader — pick the shelf they’d tap first.

Which category would a stranger open?
#CategoryPath #ShelfBrowse #IndieFiction #BookSky

@ebokiopublishing.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 5:41 PM

A scene stalls when nobody has a reason to remain.

Revision filter: for each speaking character, why haven't they left yet? Can't answer? It's a meeting, not a scene.

Why hasn't your protagonist walked out yet?

@ebokiopublishing.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 2:57 PM

Mistake #16: treating the export as finished.

Cold readers hit broken breaks, missing italics, or a “Draft” title page. Trust dies first.

Open your product page. Read 3 sample screens as a stranger.

Which 3 would you trust them to judge?
