The first of many #PennyAuctions took place in #Nebraska on #ThisDayInHistory in 1932. These were #GreatDepression examples of #DirectAction, wherein #farmers used violence or threats to prevent banks from auctioning repossessed farms, helping the former owner buy it for a penny.

The Civilian Conservation Corps, #CCC, built this #bridge across the gorge below the Lower Falls of the #GeneseeRiver in #Letchworth State Park, #NewYork during the #GreatDepression. #photography #SupportPublicLands #waterfall

A stone bride spans a river. Two people are on the bridge looking at the falls. The bridge is about 100 feet (30 m) long. It is the only way to cross the river inside the park. This is another example of the CCC's work on public lands. The arch was built by first erecting wooden trusses to support the stonework. The museum at the park has a good photo display of the bridge's construction.

Portrait of America. No. 36. Rural electrification in the U.S. This American farmer, whose farm has been electrified through a cooperative rural electrification project, carries a small efficient portable electric motor from one farm building to another to operate his modern farm equipment. Many farms in the U.S. employ these portable electric motors to operate pumps, seed separators and cleaners, churns, food mixers, separators, and other labor-saving profit-making devices. Photographed by Rothstein, Arthur, 1915-1985. Dated 1942 June. From the Library of Congress, ammem.
